Dermatologist reveals the only THREE products you really need to look after your skin – and claims most moisturisers are ‘all the same ingredients’

  • Dermatologist Natalie Spierings appeared on ITV’s Lorraine to give her advice
  • London expert says there are only three products you need
  • She said eye cream was ‘the biggest scam in the skincare industry’

A dermatologist has claimed you only need three products to take care of your skin – and says there’s no point spending lots of money on moisturiser.

London-based Natalia Spierings appeared on ITV’s Lorraine ahead of the launch of her new book Skintelligent: What you really need to know about great skin.

The beauty expert said there is no need to spend lots of money on skincare because, when you look at the ingredients of different products, they tend to be made from ‘all the same things’.

Speaking to Lorraine Kelly, Ms Spierings said there are only three products you need to take care of your skin - and they don't have to break the bank

Ms Spierings blamed ‘the big skincare marketing machine’ for the amount we spend on products.

She said it ‘makes us believe that in order to have beautiful healthy skin we have to have all these products and serums’.

Instead of buying lots of different products and breaking the bank, Ms Spierings recommended three key products everyone needs to take care of their skin: a cleanser, SPF and a moisturiser.

In particular, she recommended an ‘oil-based cleanser’ because they don’t inflame other skin conditions and can remove most other products well.

Ms Spierings also recommended a ‘heavy-duty moisturiser’ like Vaseline, which she advised applying at night.

She said: ‘It’s a big myth that Vaseline clogs up your skin. We know that’s not true from good clinical trials and evidence.’

She added some trials have suggested it can actually soothe acne.

One of Ms Spierings’ top pieces of advice is to wear SPF every single day – even in the winter.

She said: ‘The UV light is always there.’

Speaking about the enormous range of skincare products and moisturisers available, Ms Spierings said you only ever really need one moisturiser for everything because many products contain the same ingredients.

‘Eye cream is one of the biggest scams, I think, in the world of skincare.’

She added you could just use Vaseline around the eyes at night, rather than spending money on a separate eye cream.

While she said for many people, skincare is ‘a hobby’ which causes them to invest in expensive products, she advised people with specific skin conditions like eczema or rosacea to ‘cut down’ on the products they use.

Aside from the products people use on their skin, Ms Spierings said the main things people can do for anti-ageing are staying out of the sun and not smoking.

She added the evidence-based product that has been known to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles is tretinoin cream.

Tretinoin is a prescription medicine that ‘works incredibly well’ and can be bought via online dermatology services.
