York Ebor Festival Day 1 TIPS: Frankie Dettori can bring the best out of Sir Lucan in the Great Voltigeur after enhancing his reputation at Goodwood
- High Definition is the favourite among Aidan O’Brien’s three horses competing
- Queen’s Vase winner Kemari is also among the favourites for meeting at York
- Sir Lucan enhanced his reputation at Goodwood last month in Gordon Stakes
The Sky Bet Great Voltigeur hasn’t been the happiest of hunting grounds in recent times for Aidan O’Brien, but High Definition and Sir Lucan (York, 3.00) may provide a formidable assault on the staying feature on Wednesday.
The Ballydoyle trainer also saddles The Mediterranean as he bids to improve on a sole success for Idaho in the past decade in the pre-eminent St Leger trial.
Jockey bookings may suggest High Definition to be the preferred O’Brien candidate, especially as Ryan Moore’s mount is largely unexposed and boasts York form courtesy of an eye-catching comeback in the Dante.

A subsequent effort in the Irish Derby was less encouraging, and although there were minor mitigating circumstances at the Curragh, it was still a disappointing display.
In contrast, Sir Lucan enhanced his reputation at Goodwood in the Gordon Stakes, charging home to take second behind Ottoman Emperor having been last off the bridle.
Frankie Dettori appeared happy to delay his challenge for as long as possible that day and the fact the cheekpieces are applied on Wednesday suggest he was riding to orders. Sir Lucan may not be the most straightforward ride.
However, he displayed enough tenacity to overhaul stablemate Wordsworth in the Yeats Stakes back in May and that rival has subsequently finished placed in a Queen’s Vase, Irish Derby and the Group One Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp so that form looks rock solid.
Queen’s Vase winner Kemari is impossible to knock as we are arguably yet to see the best of him, but Sir Lucan has also looked as though he can compete at a higher level and has the opportunity to test that theory on Wednesday.
