Diana would be ‘disappointed’ the UK is ‘no further along’ in tackling homelessness

Prince William reveals his mother Diana introduced him to the issue of homelessness at a ‘young age’ – and he’s ‘really glad’ she did

Prince William has confessed his late mother would be ‘disappointed’ that the UK is still no further along with tackling the problem of homelessness.

The Prince of Wales appeared in a short film in last night’s Comic Relief, where he sat down with two people who had experienced homelessness – Nawshin and Miles.

In the candid conversation, William said his mother, Diana, the Princess of Wales, had been invested in tackling the problem throughout her life.

‘My mother introduced me to the cause of homelessness from a young age and I’m really glad she exposed me to that – that part of life,’ he said.

‘I think she’d be disappointed that we’re still no further along the line in terms of tackling homelessness and preventing it than probably when she was interested in and involved in it.’

It comes as reports alleged that Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis will have starring roles in the King’s Coronation procession at Westminster Abbey on May 6.

The Prince of Wales’s children are expected to join their parents in a carriage behind Charles and Camilla, who will be in the Gold State Coach, according to rehearsal documents seen by The Times.

In Prince William’s conversation with Nawshin and Miles broadcast last night, William was told intricate details about their lived experience with homelessness.

Nawshin described her story as ‘relatively complicated’, having been in and out of mental health hospital as well as having been homeless.

She said that the constant changes had affected her ‘psyche’, adding: ‘It affects your self confidence. You stop being a unique individual.’

‘Life threw so many things at me. I had to lose everything to actually find out what I needed,’ he said.

‘When you’re homeless, not having a support network, not having people you can rely on, it makes the pain of the situation so much worse,’ Nawshin added, to which William nodded in acknowledgment.

‘There’s a lot of stigma, there’s a lot of misconceptions out there about what homelessness is,’ William said.
