‘The irony was that we won a cup when I was there’: Dimitar Berbatov admits this Tottenham team is better than the sides he played in but tells current crop they must end trophy drought
Dimitar Berbatov admitted after watching Tottenham book their place in the last 16 of the Champions League that the class of 2018 are better than any of the sides he played in during his two seasons at White Hart Lane.
Berbatov, who scored 46 goals in all competitions for Spurs, was working as a pundit for BT Sport as his former club held Barcelona to a 1-1 draw in the Nou Camp on Tuesday night.
That result, coupled with Inter Milan’s failure to beat PSV in the San Siro, saw Spurs sneak through from Group B despite having taken just one point from their first three games.

Ex-Spurs star Dimitar Berbatov watched the game in the BT Sports studio and was impressed
Berbatov was impressed by what he saw from Mauricio Pochettino’s troops, but stressed the need for them to end the club’s trophy drought.
Spurs have not won a major trophy since a Berbatov penalty helped them topple Chelsea in the 2008 League Cup final and he said: ‘This is the better team when I was there. But the irony was that we won a cup when I was there but they are yet to win a trophy.
‘On a personal level, you need to show up and say ‘I’m a great player’ but what did you win in the end? You go home and think, ‘am I going to win something?’
‘But (progressing) in the Champions League, it tells you in the head that you’re going in the right direction.’
Berbatov added: ‘This is the stage to show they are one of the best clubs in the world. They need to try and win something.
‘This is how you keep your best players —by winning something.’
Lucas Moura struck Tottenham’s equaliser in the 85th minute on Tuesday, after Ousmane Dembele had opened the scoring for Barcelona early on.
