Darts fans are convinced Dutchman Dimitri van den Bergh was drunk during Sunday’s UK Open victory over Luke Humphries.

The 29-year-old edged past the reigning world champion to win the game in a tense final leg that saw Humphries first miss a chance to claim victory before Van den Bergh made the winning throw.

However, his behaviour and general demeanour in the grand final at Butlin’s Minehead resulted in plenty of frustration from supporters and Humphries himself.

Humphries had fought back from 10-8 down in the best of 21 match to put the game into a sudden death decider and was temporary halted by his opponent who appeared to deliberately try and slow things down at the start of the 19th leg.

Van den Bergh delayed his throw to force a lengthy wait before approaching the oche to begin the leg at a time when Humphries was in the ascendancy.

His opponent remained calm before the leg got underway but wasn’t matched by a frustrated crowd who shouted their concerns from within the arena.

An emotional Van den Bergh rolled on the floor after securing a first UK Open title of his career and fans have mocked his bizarre theatrics after the game.

‘Van Den Bergh is a level of drunk I’ve never seen before,’ said one critical post on X.

Another similar comment added: ‘Van den Bergh so drunk and weird haha.’

Humphries also hit out at his opponent’s ‘slow’ style afterwards, fuming: ‘He’s one of the toughest players to play because he’s incredibly slow and obviously takes a long long time to take his darts out.

‘That’s not what I’m used to with him, obviously this is a new adaption for his game.’

The Belgian star went on to dedicate the theatrical victory to his late grandad, stating: ‘First of all, everybody, he [Humphries] showed again why he is the world champion.

‘There was a moment when I was 10-7 or 10-8 up and I was like ‘I’m one leg away’ and I just lost it.

‘I lost my guts but all of a sudden it turned around. I’ve got to say my grandad passed away two years ago and this is my first major win since – this is for him,’ he added.

‘You win some, you lose some, you have to dig deep and try, it’s very simple, this year I’ve always been a bit dodgy about sports psychologists – they were probably my last choice if I wanted to get better and stronger but I said ‘give it a go’.

‘And right here, right now I really think I made the right choice. Luke also told me it works and right here I’ve got gold – grandad I’ve got gold!’ said Van den Bergh.
