Disney announces ‘end of an era’ with major changes coming to Australian market which will see an end to popular releases

Disney has made a huge change in Australia as it announced it will stop selling DVDs and Blu-ray discs Down Under in August.

The mass media and entertainment conglomerate confirmed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the last physical release, reported 7News on Friday.

With physical sales dwindling across the nation, the decision comes as streaming services such as Disney+ have dominated the home entertainment market.

Previously released titles will remain available but will not be re-stocked when they sell out, forcing fans to turn to international online retailers when the time comes.

Sanity confirmed the news this week when it tweeted: ‘Farewell to Disney’s physical media in Australia.’

As fans flocked to the comments to confirm the news, the music and entertainment company added: ‘To help clear up any confusion or questions.

‘There is no way we would post this if we didn’t know it was happening. Guardians of the Galaxy will be the last preorder.’

Many Disney fans lamented the decision, with one person writing: ‘This covers Marvel, 20th Century Fox, all of it.’

They continued: ‘A domino effect with other companies will begin. Then likely to happen all over the world. It is the end of an era.’

However, there are others who saw the change coming and said while ‘terrible’ the move was inevitable given the current media market.

Australian movie and pop-culture reviewer Dave Lee said he wasn’t surprised by Disney’s decision to pull out of the physical media market Down Under.

‘I’ll be very candid about home media in Australia. It’s doing terribly,’ he tweeted.

‘Almost no one I know in real life buys physical. The physical “collectors” online are a very, very small bubble.

‘It’s been dire straits out here for a while. This has been a long time coming… doesn’t mean it doesn’t suck.’
