Disney+ set to crack down on password sharing and stop ‘freeloaders’ in their tracks

Disney+ is about to tackle ‘freeloaders’ head on.

The multinational corporation is set to roll out the final phase in their password sharing measures which will impact thousands of dodgy Aussies.

‘We started our password-sharing initiative in June. That kicks in, in earnest, in September,’ said CEO Bob Iger at a recent meeting.

The new initiative will prevent subscribers from sharing their password with friends and family, stopping them accessing the thousands of movies and TV shows on the service for free.

Some of the most popular programs on the streaming service include the Marvel superhero films, the Star Wars franchise and iconic series, The Simpsons.

The company is set to track the IP address of users to ensure their service is not being used in unauthorised locations.

Mr Iger added the proposed plan had been positively received by most subscribers and the company was confident it was making the right decision.

‘We’ve had no backlash at all to the notifications that have gone out and to the work we’ve already been doing,’ he said.

The bold move follows in the footsteps of several other streaming giants, including Netflix, who have implemented safeguards to prevent password sharing.

Cracking down on password sharing has worked for Netflix, with soaring profits and record subscriber numbers.

Meanwhile, Disney+ also unveiled an upcoming feature called ‘Extra Members’ that will make users pay an extra fee for ‘freeloaders’ using their account in another household.

Exactly when Extra Member will be available is unclear.

MailOnline contacted the streaming giant for more information.
