DIY pro’s budget and rental friendly hack for hanging curtains without putting holes in the wall

An Australian home stylist has shared a renter-friendly way to install sheer curtains for just $55, giving any home a chic, Hamptons vibe.

Tiffany, from Wollongong, hung her $11 Kmart sheer curtains using four broom grippers and an expanding curtain rod from Bunnings that cost just $55.68.

The savvy stylist posted a clip to her Instagram page showing how to install the sheer curtains in minutes without drilling holes in the wall.

Tiffany, a Wollongong mum and home stylist shared a rental-friendly hack for hanging curtains that won’t break the bank

‘It’s super quick and easy and perfect for renters looking for a damage-free way to hang curtains,’ the mum-of-two wrote in the video’s caption.

Tiffany started by sticking four 3M broom grippers, that can hold up to 1.8kg each and adhere to the wall without peeling off the paint, horizontally just above her window frame.

She threaded the Kmart curtains onto the Bunnings rod which she then extended to the width of her windows.

The DIY guru mounted the curtain rod in each of the grippers which are designed to store mops and brooms off the floor.

What did Tiffany use to hang up her curtains?

  • 1 x $11 Kmart Toulouse Voile Tab Top Curtain White
  • 1 x $18.70 Windoware 150cm Black Expanding Reno Curtain Rod from Bunnings
  • 2 x Command 1.8kg Broom Gripper – 2 Pack from Bunnings

‘After I made the video, I ended up moving the curtain rod down to the window frame so the sheers now touch the floor,’ Tiffany added.

‘It’s a great little hack for us renters when we have to compromise with everything styling wise.’

Tiffany’s video racked up thousands of views and many renters in the comments were impressed with her handy work.

‘Wish we knew this for our previous rental!’ one person wrote while another said: ‘Such a great hack, they look so luxe!’

‘Totally love this and would do this when we move out of our current rental with sheers,’ replied a third.

‘You should have put them higher towards the ceiling and the window and the room would have looked sooo much bigger,’ a fourth suggested.

Previously a Kmart shopper wowed thousands with her renter hack by repurposing $35 Kmart kitchen trolleys into a makeshift kitchen island.

The mum shared her easy hack on a popular Facebook group with over 380,000 members and her post received thousands of likes and several hundred comments.

‘I bought 4 of these $35 kitchen trolleys and joined them together to make an island bench in my small kitchen,’ she wrote. ‘I’m in love!’

How to make a room look bigger using curtains

Hang them as high as possible

Choosing long curtains and hanging them high above the window will give the illusion of more height.

Mounting curtain rods or tracks closer to the ceiling instead of a few inches above the window itself is a trick many interior designers and decorators have been using for years.

Luxurious floor-to-ceiling curtains demand attention and will draw the eye up towards the ceiling.

Choose vertical prints and textures

Prints and patterns that contain vertical elements such as stripes can also be used to draw attention up towards the ceiling and make a room look bigger.

The pattern doesn’t have to be majorly bold, even a subtle texture running up through the curtains can be all it takes to make the eye wander to the top of the room.

Try to steer clear of bold horizontal prints as this could have the opposite effect and make the room feel smaller and overcrowded.

Go Long

Another optical illusion that you can create is to install a rod wider than the window you’re covering.

Having a rod that’s wider than the window will allow you to pull the curtains back further to show more of the window.

Being able to see all of the window will allow more light into the room, which instantly makes a space feel more open and airy.

While Kmart no longer stocks the specific product the mum used, several other similar options are presently available for purchase, such as a $62 kitchen bench prep trolley.

One of the best aspects of the makeshift kitchen island is being able to customise it to fit the rest of your furniture.

The Kmart product is made of rubberwood and pinewood, both of which are easy to paint over and modify.

The mum simply bought four trolleys and stood them adjacent to each other to create a square-shaped bench-top and storage unit.

Many praised the mum’s genius idea to expand the amount of storage space in small kitchens in a stylish manner.

‘This looks so fashionable – it fits right in!’ wrote one woman.

‘The added storage space is the real kicker – I can finally take my fruits off my dining table.’

Hundreds were excited because this newfound trick could see then building renting-safe kitchen islands.

‘I’ve always wanted a kitchen island like in the movies but no house I’ve rented has had them … until now,’ said one.

‘This is a genius trick to instantly transform an area with empty space.’

‘I have a small kitchen but I feel like only using two of those trolleys would work wonders for the decor,’ said a fourth.
