Dog owner lied about finding pooch with slit throat and duct-taped mouth to get free vet care

Ohio man who claimed he found an injured dog with a slit throat and duct-taped mouth was in fact the pet’s OWNER – and he lied about finding it on the road to get free vet care

  • The dog named Dani was brought to a clinic in West Carrollton, Ohio, on August  17 by a man who claimed he found the helpless animal on the street
  • The dog’s harrowing injuries caught the attention of local media and the man was praised as a hero for rushing Dani to the hospital
  • Dani’s throat had been cut by a barbed wire fence and it had suffered snout injuries after having been muzzled with duct tape for several hours each day
  • Investigators later determined that the Good Samaritan was the dog’s owner
  • Police say the man, who was not named, made up the story to avoid vet bills

An Ohio man who claimed to have found an injured dog with a slit throat and duct-taped mouth has been accused of fabricating the story to get free veterinary care after the pet was injured in his care.

Police say the man, who has not been named, brought the dog named Dani to Twin Maple Veterinarian Clinic in West Carrollton on August 17 and claimed he found the helpless animal on the street.

The dog’s harrowing injuries caught the attention of local media and the man was praised as a hero for rushing Dani to the hospital.

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones called the case ‘appalling’ vowed to track down the alleged abuser.

However, investigators later determined that the Good Samaritan was the dog’s owner, and that he made up the story for free vet care.

‘Upon interviewing the owner, it was relayed to our detectives they could not afford the veterinarian bills, so they concocted a story to get the canine help for free,’ Jones said in a statement Monday.

Dani’s throat had been cut by a barbed wire fence and it had suffered snout injuries after its owners kept it muzzled for several hours each day so it couldn’t chew on things in their home.

The pooch was treated and is expected to survive.

The sheriff said the dog’s owner lives in neighboring Warren County, so the case is now being handled by officials in both counties.

‘We will make a joint effort to work with the adjacent jurisdiction to ensure this case is dealt with appropriately,’ Jones said.

It is unclear whether the owner will face charges for the incident.
