Downton Abbey is expected to lead the weekend box office over Ad Astra and the latest Rambo flick

PBS’s beloved costume drama series Downton Abbey is returning as a feature length theatrical film this weekend, and projections have the movie pegged to fare rather well as compared to other titles opening at the same time.

The film version of Downton Abbey is estimated to make around $30 million during its opening weekend, as reported by Variety, making for an admirable lead at the North American box office ahead of new more masculine-focused films from Brad Pitt and Sylvester Stallone.

Brad Pitt’s sci-fi drama-thriller Ad Astra is expected to come in second with roughly $20 million, and Sly Stallone’s actioner Rambo: Last Blood is charting to take home $18 million for third place.

Rounding out the top five films this weekend are two previously released films, with Jennifer Lopez’s well-received Hustlers coming in fourth with around $16 million for the fourth slot, and It: Chapter Two trailing behind with a $14 million bite of the box office.

Downton Abbey, which aired as part of PBS’ Masterpiece Classics from 2010 to 2015, centered around the Earl of Grantham and the Crawley family along with the servants who work underneath them at the turn of the 20th century in England.

The show developed a rabid fan base, and won 16 Emmys during its six-season run.

The movie version is set a bit later than the end of the series, in 1927, and original cast members including Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Dame Maggie Smith and Hugh Bonneville are returning.

Imelda Staunton, Geraldine James, Simon Jones, David Haig and Tuppence Middleton are some of the new faces to be joining the Downton cast for the film, which is bring distributed by Focus Features. 

To date, Downton Abbey has received a very healthy 85 percent on film review aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes.

Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Jamie Kennedy and Donald Sutherland round out the cast for the sci-fi epic, which so far has garnered an impressive 82 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Finally, there is the latest installment in the Rambo franchise, Rambo: Last Blood starring a 73-year-old Sylvester Stallone. 

The first entry in the series, First Blood, came out 37 years ago, and the last installment (the fourth), simply titled Rambo, was released 11 years ago.

Last Blood catches up with  Stallone’s mercenary John Rambo as he heads into Mexico to confront a violent cartel who has kidnapped one of his friend’s daughters. 

The movie also stars Paz Vega, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Louis Mandylor and Yvette Monreal.

So far, Rambo: Last Blood has managed only 34 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
