A quiet residential street was rocked today, after an over-cleaning company’s van exploded in the middle of the road causing homes in the surrounding area to shake. 

CCTV from a house opposite the explosion in Chelmsford, Essex shows debris flying from the van as a man escapes from inside and rushes for cover behind another car.

The footage shows the camera shaking from the force of the explosion and the window of the van flying through the air before landing on the ground.

The white van then drives into view and smoke can be seen emerging from the engine and doors, which were blown outwards with the force of the explosion.

The dramatic video shows the driver who manages to stop the van and then runs to hide behind a nearby car. 

Emergency services rushed to the scene and the driver – a man in his thirties – suffered burns and was taken to hospital.

Gulam Kadir, who lives near to where the blast happened, said: ‘The whole house shook. We thought it was the scaffolding next door but realised it would not have shaken the whole house.’

Gulam’s son Keyaan added: ‘My bed shook.’ Another neighbour who saw the van blow up outside his house described the moment: ‘His car went down the road and just blew up. 

‘There was a person in it- he was a bit shaken. He was driving down here and it blew up. Luckily he managed to park without doing major damage. 

‘I just heard a loud bang. It is a cleaning van so something must have leaked- the damage is surrounding the whole van. I called for the fire brigade and the other emergency services came as well.’

Essex Fire and Rescue Service have said that an investigation will take place into the cause of the explosion, but at this stage they do not believe it to be suspicious

Meanwhile, Essex Police have reopened the road after urging members of the public to avoid the area while the emergency services deal with the incident.
