Driver abandons smashed VW Golf in Manchester city centre

A driver abandoned a smashed-up Volkswagen Golf with a crumpled bonnet in a city centre after a crash with a note saying: ‘I borrowed the car, I’ll leave it here for you, love you.’

The mystery red vehicle was apparently ditched on Saturday evening after a collision involving other vehicles and a post.

It was accompanied by a neatly written note on the windscreen that read: ‘Hi Julia, so, erm, yeah. I borrowed the car. I’ll leave it here for you. The keys are on the rack. Love you xxx.’

The airbags had been activated and the windscreen smashed however it appears the driver was safe enough to run off, leaving the car and the strange letter behind.

The car, which still sits on a traffic island in the centre of Stevenson Square in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, a hub for the city’s nightlife, has prompted much speculation among local workers.

A barista, who wished to remain anonymous, said: ‘There was a crash. I didn’t see it but my mate did.

‘It happened on Saturday night. There were three cars and the Golf turned and hit a post or something. That’s all I know.’

Art supplies store worker Chris, 31, added: ‘The car was here all yesterday too. Something happened on Saturday night.

‘It’s a bit funny, isn’t it? I don’t know who Julia is but it seems like a joyriding incident.

‘The police are looking into it now I think.’

Greater Manchester Police has been contacted for comment.
