Driver is shot by police and a woman ‘is stabbed’ in Sunshine Coast, Queensland

Driver is shot by police and a pregnant woman ‘is stabbed’ after a 200km high-speed chase and carjacking shuts down a busy highway

A driver has been shot by police and a pregnant woman is reported to have been stabbed after a 200km high-speed chase on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

The man was shot by police after he tried to flee his car near Yandina, before being run over by another car, witnesses told the Sunshine Coast Daily.

Officers are believed to have opened fire after realising the man was armed.

He taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital under police guard and his condition is unclear.

The man is reported to have stolen a car in Hervey Bay this morning before ditching it in Maryborough.

He allegedly carjacked a white Ford Falcon sedan in Tinana West before stabbing a 37-year-old woman, who is believed to be pregnant.

She was taken to Hervey Bay Hospital and is in a stable condition with injuries to one of her hands.

Witnesses told the Sunshine Coast Daily that they saw the driver weaving between lanes as he was chased by police.

Julie-Ann Kurikawa was sitting in traffic when police opened fire on the man and said it was like something out of a movie.

‘I was here first, traffic was stopped because the guy fell down, he was lying on the ground bleeding from being run him over and being shot at,’ she said.

‘It was very traumatic. I just closed my eyes. He was screaming at me, I was panicking.’

More to come.
