Driver of Mercedes dies after it caught fire in Melbourne

A man has died after a fiery car crash that ended with his Mercedes colliding with a metal light pole and bursting into flames.

Emergency services responded to reports of car that on fire at the intersection of Waverley Rd and Springvale Rd in Melbourne.

Investigators were told that a Mazda Sedan ran up the back of the Mercedes, causing it to mount a median strip and hit the pole.

The Mazda then veered off the road and hit two cars that were on display in a Glen Waverley showroom, according to news.com.au.

The driver of the Mercedes, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 1.50am on Saturday morning.

The Mazda driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries. He was also the only person in the car at the time.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are currently at the scene as they continue their investigations on Saturday morning.

At this stage, it is believed that the driver of the Mercedes was a male, and police are investigating if speed was a contributing factor in the collision.
