Driver spots red-bellied black snake outside car window

An Australian driver was given the fright of his life after spotting a venomous snake hitching a ride on the outside of his car.

Ted Ogier was driving near Eden, on the New South Wales south coast, on Wednesday when he saw a red-bellied black snake slither alongside the driver’s window.

Mr Ogier said the snake had slithered out from the bonnet and wrapped itself around the driver’s side mirror, appearing to look directly at the driver.

‘It’d come out from under the engine bay under the bonnet, it was probably a bit warm there,’ Mr Ogier told the ABC. 

‘It was sort of tapping on the window a couple of times, because it obviously wanted to get in.’ 

Not easily shaken, Mr Ogier eventually pulled over and called his co-worker, Kai Pearse, who came and removed the snake with a broom.

‘I just had a broom in the back of the ute and basically just got him off the car nice and safely, and just ushered him into the bushland off on the side of the road,’ Mr Pearse said.

The pair believed the snake to be around 2.5 metres long and said the serpent was probably just wanted somewhere warm to sleep.

While Mr Ogier said there are worse creatures to encounter on the road, such as spiders, social media thought otherwise.

The photos, shared online by Mr Ogier’s employer, attracted many comments telling the driver to simply get rid of the car. 

‘I would have jumped out the passenger side and left the car in the middle of the road,’ one person wrote.

While another suggested a more drastic option: ‘Burn the car it’s not worth it.’

One person believed the snake was ‘even worse than a huntsman in the car’.
