A driver has provided police with a one-of-a-kind excuse, after being pulled over for speeding.

The motorist was caught travelling at 91km/h in an 80km/h zone in North Dandalup, about an hour south of Perth, on Boxing Day.

After being pulled over on Lakes Road, the driver told officers they were ‘too busy thinking about my trifle’, rather than the speed limit.

The incident report, uploaded by the Western Australia Police Force, drew plenty of comments online.

Social media users were split between praising the driver for their excuse and slamming them for speeding.

‘Thinking about trifle. That is certainly understandable. Why do the police not have more compassion!,’ one person wrote.

Others were more confused as to the dessert itself, asking what a trifle is.

While the driver may have been preoccupied with their festive dessert, they were lucky to avoid causing an accident.

The North Dandalup driver did not avoid punishment however, copping a $100 fine for the offence.
