A man who was cut from his wrecked car after smashing into another vehicle and tested positive for methamphetamine has been fined $350 and disqualified from driving for one month.

Donald Shane McGregor, 56, pleaded guilty to driving with methamphetamine in his saliva at Bells Bridge in Queensland.

At the Gympie Magistrates Court on Monday McGregor was given a $350 fine and banned from driving for one month by Magistrate Chris Callaghan, the Gympie Times reported.

Mr Callaghan said the level of methamphetamine in McGregor’s system was insufficient to have impacted his driving.

The crash on January 13, 2017 occurred when McGregor’s Ford sedan swerved into an oncoming lane and smashed into a Toyota four-wheel-drive.

McGregor had to be cut from his wrecked car and was airlifted to hospital in Brisbane.

‘I believe I suffered a diabetic blackout,’ McGregor told the court on Monday.

He pleaded guilty to driving with methamphetamine in his saliva.

Police agreed with McGregor’s version of events, that the crash was caused by ‘an unexpected medical episode suffered by the defendant’.

McGregor claimed to have suffered 24 broken bones in the crash.

In addition to being fined $350, Mr Callaghan lessened the length of time McGregor would be barred from driving for.

‘Given that you live in regional Queensland I disqualify you for one month rather than three,’ Mr Callaghan said.

The driver of the other car was taken to hospital in a stable condition at the time of the crash.
