Dark web drug raid ‘uncovers one of Australia’s largest ever hauls of LSD’ – as a teenager is charged with trafficking 20,000 tabs of the  hallucinogen

  • Man from Marion, Adelaide’s south, allegedly bought $300,000 worth of LSD
  • He allegedly tried to move the 20,000 tabs to a house in the CBD and sell them
  • The 18-year-old was arrested by police and charged with trafficking a substance

A major dark web drug bust has allegedly uncovered one of Australia’s largest ever LSD seizures – as an 18-year-old is charged with trafficking the substance.

The man, from Marion in Adelaide’s south, allegedly attempted to traffic 20,000 tabs of LSD, which were bought from the dark web.

Police allege the man had organised to have the $300,000 haul, purchased from the Netherlands, mailed to an address in Adelaide’s CBD.

He was arrested after he allegedly arrived to collect the parcel, which was not addressed to him, and he was charged with trafficking a large commercial quantity of a controlled substance.

The man appeared before Adelaide Magistrates Court this afternoon and applied for bail.

His lawyer argued in court that the package was not addressed to the man and he was from a good family who supported him, the ABC reported.

Detective Chief Inspector Tony Crameri said drugs such as LSD are extremely dangerous and a seizure of this size is very rare.

‘This is a highly dangerous hallucinogenic drug which can have long term health effects on the user,’ he warned.

‘Someone importing a drug like this from Europe is risking their health and liberty with drug manufacturers only interested in profit.

‘Seizures of this size are very rare around the world.’

AFP Coordinator Operations, Superintendent Gail McClure, said this major drug bust should act as a warning to others.

‘This operation should send a strong warning to criminals that if you participate in illegal activities, the AFP will catch, arrest and prosecute you,’ Superintendent McClure said.

‘Working in partnership with South Australia Police and other JAIST agencies allows us to prevent these drugs from getting onto Australian streets and causing harm to our communities.

The man will reappear in Adelaide Magistrate Court on Friday.
