He was the king of rock and roll in the 1960s when Prince Charles was a teenager and it seems that the future monarch may be something of a fan.

The Prince of Wales showed off his moves at a tea dance in the Walled Garden Pavilion at Dumfries House this afternoon, while he and Camilla were serenaded by Elvis impersonator John Reid singing Don’t Be Cruel.

The royal, known as the Duke of Rothesay in Scotland, twirled his wife around the dancefloor while waving his umbrella, clearly feeling inspired by the music.

Around sixty elderly were taking part in the tea dance while more than 150 members of the local community who have been beneficiaries of the Dumfries House Estate’s activities have also been invited to join an afternoon tea.

Charles helped arrange a £45 million deal to buy the house and its collection of Chippendale furniture and secure its future.

He led a consortium of charities and the Scottish Government to make the purchase in 2007, with his own Prince’s Charities Foundation contributing £20 million.

The property, which was designed by the Adam brothers, was put up for sale by its former owner, the aristocrat and former racing driver Johnny Bute.

It opened to the public in the summer of 2008 following intensive restoration work.

Dumfries House now employs more than 200 full-time and part-time staff across the house, estate and education and training programmes.

It has been providing ‘heritage-led regeneration’ for the local community and has become a hub of charitable activity.

Earlier, Camilla’s day of royal engagements got off to a fun start this morning when she had the chance to climb into the driver’s seat of a fire engine.

The Duchess of Rothesay, 70, sat behind the wheel of a £260,000 fire engine as she joined the Prince on a tour of a company that produces emergency vehicles.

Charles and Camilla visited Emergency One (E1) which manufactures fleets of emergency vehicles for fire services across the UK.

During their short tour of the company based in Cumnock, East Ayrshire, the couple chatted to some of the firm’s 180 employees, including 30 apprentices.

The company works with The Prince’s Trust, taking on a number of young people though their training courses and offering apprenticeships for auto electricians, coach builders, mechanical fitters and automotive painters.

The couple saw how the vehicles began their journey as a basic shell before the interiors were filled with vital fire-fighting equipment.

They also saw engineers, electricians and coach builders completing the vehicles at the plant.

Camilla, wearing a lime green Mr Roy suit and Burberry trench coat, toured one side of the vast garage, while Charles, who wore a light grey suit, chatted to workers and apprentices on the other.

‘He was civil and nice and was interested in what I did.’

‘Camilla was saying to me that it was good that I was a woman in a man’s world. She was asking me how I was treated and what I did.’

On Thursday, Charles and Camilla will also visit Netherhird Community Garden in Cumnock and meet volunteers and local schoolchildren.

The garden was developed to give the community a pleasant space to visit and combat its reputation for anti-social behaviour.
