This is the dramatic moment a deep-sea diver nearly has his head bitten off by a shark as it looms up behind him in the murky water.

The underwater footage is thought to have been recorded off the coast of Long Island, New York.

The unsuspecting diver was caught on camera swimming directly towards the jaws of the giant predator before ducking out of the way at the very last minute. 

In the video, the diver can be seen gently paddling his feet as he propels himself through the water. 

Bubbles frantically rise up from his breathing apparatus before he spins around to look toward his companion holding the camera. 

But suddenly a dark shadow looms towards him as he has his back turned.
