  • Spain’s Jon Rahm carded a 69 in his final round to finish second

World No 1 Dustin Johnson surged to an eight-shot victory with a sterling performance at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, and even nearly managed to hit a hole-in-one on a 433-yard par-4 hole.

The American closed with an eight-under-par 65 to take the title by a sizeable margin from closest competitor Jon Rahm in Hawaii, but it was his colossal tee shot on the 12th hole that was even more breathtaking.

Johnson let rip his driver on full power, and with a favourable 12mph wind blowing straight at the target his ball bounded downhill along the fairway and onto the green.

The ball continued straight towards the pin, seemingly laser-guided towards its target, before pulling up agonisingly six inches short of what would have been an albatross and a quite incredible hole-in-one. INstead he tapped in for the simplest of eagles.

The 33-year-old followed up rounds of 69, 68 and 66 by taking four birdies on the front nine, and a back nine which included that eagle on the 12th. The only blemish on his Sunday card came on the par-three 11th.

Spain’s Rahm carded a 69 in his final round to edge out American Brian Rahman (72) in second, with Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama tied for fourth after getting an eagle and two birdies in the last four holes.

Australian Marc Leishman, who was the joint leader at the halfway stage but carded a 76 on Saturday, finished tied for seventh on 13 under, while Jordan Spieth was a shot behind and finished ninth.
