Plenty of vacationers have swam with dolphins, but how many can say they’ve kept up with them underwater?
Dutch submersible firm U-Boat Worx has just announced the Super Sub, a bullet-shaped electric submarine it’s aiming at ecotourists who want to frolic under the sea with turtles, sharks and other marine life.
U-boat Workx claims the Super Sub is able to reach speeds of eight knots, or 9.2 miles, per hour.
That’s nearly three times as fast as the average luxury submersible and two miles an hour quicker than a bottlenose dolphin’s average cruising speed.
The price tag on the Super Sub starts at $5.8 million for the base model, U-boat Worx marketing manager Roy Heijdra told DailyMail.com.
‘The model itself is aimed at both private owners and commercial ventures,’ Heijdra said. ‘It wouldn’t be surprising to see a high-end resort operate a Super Sub in the near future.’

With a long tail and bubble-shaped cabin, the vessel weighs about 20,000 pounds and comfortably seats two passengers and a pilot.
Running 17.5 feet long and 7.2 feet tall, the Super Sub is roomier and faster than other submersibles. In comparison, the Deepflight Dragon, just 16.4 feet long and 3.6 feet tall, peaks at 4 knots (4.6 mph).
It has ultra-light lithium-ion batteries and a 62-kilowatt propulsion system capable of lasting up to eight hours underwater between charges.
Navigation systems include a specialized SHARC controller that offers intuitive maneuverability,’ as well as auto-heading cruise control and auto-depth hold.

The vessel has 96 hours of life support and can go eight hours before it needs to recharge
The vessel can achieve ‘steep 30-degree climbs and dives,’ according to a release from the company, while a wireless MARLIN controller can direct the submarine from the surface.
‘The result is the smoothest and most exhilarating underwater experience, capable of diving to depths of [980 feet], all while maintaining an almost 360-degree view’ thanks to its ultra-clear acrylic hull, according to the statement.
The life support system provides at least 96 hours of oxygen but passengers won’t be seeing mysterious creatures from the ocean floor: The Super Sub is only rated for depths of slightly less than 1,000 feet, a region of the ocean known as the Mesopelagic or ‘twilight’ zone.
It’s the last layer where the sun’s rays penetrate and its inhabitants include squid, swordfish, and bioluminescent fish, as well as jellyfish, sharks and dolphins who rise to shallower waters at night to feed.
Last year, U-boat Worx unveiled NEMO, a two-seat submarine that stood barely five feet tall and weighed just 5,500 pounds.

It billed NEMO, which retailed for $1.13 million, as ‘the lightest manned submersible ever built,’ and claimed it could be towed behind a car on a trailer.
NEMO was aimed at a more mass market, as ‘the only production line submarine in the world,’ according to U-Boat Worx.

U-Boat Worx said it’s already made its first sale with delivery expected in 2023.
The Super Sub will eventually represent a full range of models, it added, ‘setting a new bar for the high-end luxury, adventurer underwater exploration market.’
