Paralympic hero Dylan Alcott reveals the appalling reason his first job interview was cancelled on the spot

Australian Paralympian Dylan Alcott has revealed he was discriminated against for being disabled when he attended his first job interview while at university.

The tennis star, 31, told Will and Woody on Thursday he was booked for an interview that was immediately cancelled once the hiring panel learned he used a wheelchair.

Dylan said he did not disclose he was in a wheelchair when he applied for the job because ‘if I did I wouldn’t have got the interview’.

The 2022 Australian of the Year said he knew things were grim when he showed up at the office and realised the interview was upstairs.

The three-time Paralympic gold medalist said he asked staff if they could have it downstairs, and they responded: ‘We might as well just cancel it.’

Dylan said his experience ‘happens every day’ for wheelchair users because of a ‘lack of expectation’ amongst the general public.

‘We’ve got to change, not just in employment, but in dating and in life,’ he added.

He has been working to promote this change by partnering with Grant Burge Wines for its Leave Your Mark campaign, which provides tertiary scholarships for people with disabilities.

Dylan and his sexologist girlfriend Chantelle Otten made headlines earlier this year after a video surfaced of him controlling a vibrating sex toy that was inside her while they were out to dinner with friends.

The footage ruffled feathers on Twitter, with some critics saying his behaviour was ‘unbecoming’ of a role model who was awarded one of his country’s highest honours.

Others, however, found his antics either hilarious or harmless.

He told Body + Soul magazine last month he is proud of his relationship and doesn’t pay attention to the media fuss over it.
