During their father/daughter acting duo’s interview on CBS, Sean said that he envisioned Dylan in the role from the first time that he read the script over a decade ago.

‘I started to read the script and within 30 pages, her face became imprinted on it and it was not something that I could see any other way from that time,’ he told host Anthony Mason.

Dylan revealed that she was initially reluctant to take the role. ‘The first time was a resounding ‘no,’ she explained. ‘Acting was just not something I ever thought I would do in a million years.’

After Sean offered her the role years later, Dylan said she reconsidered after her mother, Robin Wright, 54, described her experience being directed by her ex-husband.

Dylan said, ‘She said she had the best experience working with him as a director.’

Sean went on to say that the two had a ‘blood harmony’ and shared an ‘intuitive shorthand’ while working together on set.

‘It was very rare that I gave a lot of direction to her,’ the Milk star said. ‘She was like a truth machine.’

However, Sean and Dylan did recount one funny dispute that they had during an appearance on Late Night With Stephen Colbert.

When Colbert, 57,  asked if they ever ‘got into loggerheads’ while filming Flag Day, Dylan said, ‘We had one major — I think it was a two-hour — standoff about a note he had.’

‘Two hours over one note?’ Stephen responded.

Dylan explained, ‘About whether I could wear mascara or not wear mascara.’

Amid the laughter of the in-studio audience, she said, ‘He won.’

Colbert joked that the altercation sounded like ‘a father usually has with a daughter when she’s 12.

He asked, ‘Did you guys so someplace private to have this fight, or was it just a knockdown, drag-out in front of the crew?’

Sean said, ‘It was, once it was clear that she was making the wrong decision, I just went and sat down.’

‘And then the silence was one the crew had to live with for two hours while the Penns figured it out.’
