Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jordan Matthews can thank his brief tenure in sleepy Buffalo for his newborn son because, as he told reporters on Wednesday, ‘There wasn’t anything to do there but each other.’
Matthews and his wife, National Women’s Soccer League star Cheyna Matthews, were married in 2017 and welcomed their new son Josiah on August 24.
Matthews played his first three seasons with the Eagles before he was traded to Buffalo in August 2017. He signed with the New England Patriots in April but was released during training camp after he injured his hamstring and had remained a free agent until he returned to Philadelphia with a new deal on Wednesday.
The fact that Josiah was born in August suggests he was conceived during the winter, when Western New York is typically pounded by feet of snow.

In the winter of 2017-18, Buffalo was layered with 112.3 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service, which is the most the region received since the winter of 2014-15.
In fact, there were six ‘lake effect events’ for the month of December alone, which were particularly harsh for areas east of Lake Erie.
In 2015, after a pair of snowstorms dumped a remarkable 70 inches of snow over Buffalo over five days, officials at the Mercy Hospital told the Associated Press they experienced a ‘mini baby boom’ roughly nine months later.
‘Nowhere to go, nothing to do,’ new parents Jason and Stephanie Brueggeman told the AP at the time.
Despite Jordan Matthews’ claim, Cheyna’s Instagram account did show a picture of the happy couple at nearby Niagara Falls, which receives an estimated 30 million visitors each year. ‘
Unfortunately for the Matthews family, the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres struggled in 2017-18, finishing in last place in the Atlantic Division.
Several members of the Eagles were excited to get Matthews back, including friend Carson Wentz, who is preparing to return from injury under center, and coach Doug Pederson.
‘We’re excited to get him back,’ Pederson said. ‘He knows our offense. I think it’s huge. It has a comfort level for the quarterback knowing that you got another receiver that we brought in from the outside who has worked with him in the past. I just think it can be a benefit to Carson.’
Mike Wallace was placed on injured reserve after suffering a broken fibula in a 27-21 loss at Tampa Bay.
The Eagles (1-1) are still missing top receiver Alshon Jeffery following offseason shoulder surgery. Mack Hollins and now Wallace are on IR.
Cheyna Matthews plays for the Washington Spirit and has eight goals in 38 appearances. She also appeared for the United States under-23 team.
