Earthquake in NYC and New Jersey causes social media to explode with hilarious memes as tri-state area quake reaches 4.8-magnitude: ‘We will rebuild!’

New York City was rocked by a historic 4.8 magnitude earthquake on Friday morning.

Shocked residents of the tri-state area were quick to flock to social media to share their reactions to the rare quake.

The earthquake was a 4.8 and trembles were felt in NYC, Philadelphia, New Jersey and parts of Connecticut.

The epicenter of the quake was near Readington in Hunterdon County in NJ, per governor Phil Murphy.

Users on X joked about how shook, literally and figuratively, East Coasters were by the quake.

The Empire State building’s official account on X jokingly posted ‘I AM FINE’ just one minute after the earthquake hit.

Brandon Trusso posted a picture of a fallen trash can with garbage spilling out of it and wrote ‘We survived the NYC earthquake. We will rebuild.’

There was no reported damage from the 4.8 quake.

‘Them 30 seconds felt like 5 mins cause I thought my room was finna collapse and I was gonna die,’ another user posted.

At first, East Coasters didn’t know what was going on as the ground began to shake – but the word spread quick that it was indeed a natural disaster.

Many jokingly compared the unsuspecting residents of New York City to Californians… who have gotten used to dealing with earthquakes over the years.

An emergency alert was set off on cell phones 40 minutes after the earthquake hit, leading social media users to share more hilarious memes about the delayed reaction.

New Yorkers second guessed themselves when the trembles hit the Big Apple and sprinted to social media to confirm their suspicions.

‘I genuinely thought I was losing it,’ a user posted.

Social media users have shared posts about the earthquake, also felt in New Jersey, Virginia and Philadelphia.

In midtown Manhattan, the usual cacophony of traffic grew louder as motorists blared their horns on momentarily shuddering streets.

Some Brooklyn residents heard a booming sound and their building shaking. In an apartment house in Manhattan’s East Village, a resident from more earthquake-prone California calmed nervous neighbors.
