Ed Sheeran labels Australian singer ‘an amazing songwriter and performer’ in surprising post

Ed Sheeran has shared a gushing post to social media praising an iconic Australian singer.

The English rock star, 33, appeared in an Instagram video in which he admitted he has been a huge fan of indie pop star Missy Higgins, 41, ever since her first album in 2004.

‘I am a huge Missy Higgins fans and have been since I was 13 years old and discovered her album The Sound of White,’ Ed told his fans.

‘It was a seminal album of my childhood and teenage years. She’s just an amazing songwriter and performer.’

Ed then spoke fondly of his 2018 Australian tour where Missy was his opening act and performed several duets with him on stage, in front of thousands of screaming fans.

‘I got to have her on the Divide Tour with me and it was just a joy to watch her every night. I’m excited to hear her new music!’

Ed and Missy’s music has a lot in common, with both frequently releasing pop-rock ballads about love and relationships.

Missy’s sixth studio album – her first since 2018 – called The Second Act, was released on Friday.

Ed previously admitted he was a fan of the singer, having spotted her while on a family holiday to Australia when he was 13.

After seeing her perform at a concert at the Sydney Opera House, the fiery-haired Englishman developed a crush on the Australian crooner.

Ed told Nova back in 2012 that Missy was ‘one of my first biggest crushes’.

Taking that compliment in her stride, Missy told the newspaper: ‘I love the thought that a 13-year-old Ed Sheeran was listening to my music. It’s so cool.’

She further gushed: ‘He’s the biggest singer songwriter in the world and while I don’t think anyone would dare claim influencing him, it’s really lovely when somebody tells you your music has inspired them in some small way’.

Since she exploded onto the music scene back in 2004, the Melbourne-born singer has been one of the country’s most beloved stars, having sold more than a million records and scooping multiple ARIAs.

She has been releasing music since 2003 and also branched off into acting, appearing in the 2010 Australian movie Bran Nue Dae.
