Ed Sheeran tops Australia’s ARIA chart as his latest album Autumn Variations debuts at number one

Pop superstar Ed Sheeran has shot to the top of Australia’s ARIA music chart with his latest album, Autumn Variations.

This is the second time this year that the 32-year-old hitmaker has debuted at number one after his – (Subtract) LP performed the same feat when it dropped in May.

The latest album is also the seventh time he topped the chart in Australia overall and the sixth time the English-born star has debuted at the top of the ARIA chart.

Still, according to the ARIA charts, the fan favourite has to beat Aussie rock legend Jimmy Barnes before he can claim the most number one albums Down Under.

The Scottish born singer, 67, has scored an eye-watering 15 top albums on the ARIA charts.

Meanwhile, Irish superstars U2 and American pop singer Taylor Swift are the next best sellers with 11 albums each reaching ARIAs number one position.

Sheeran, meanwhile, has elected not to make any music videos for his new album.

Instead, the red-headed singer created a series of videos in which he visits fans at their homes to promote the album.

Each of the 14 videos features Sheeran playing a track from Autumn Variations to ga-ga fans.

Sheeran took to social media to explain the off-beat promos.

‘So I did some surprise pop up gigs in fans houses, secretly recording a live album of Autumn Variations where each song is recorded in a different fans living room, but all of it was a total surprise,’ he said.

Included in one of the sessions, recorded with fan Kari, is a version of his song Wake Me Up from his + album.

The tune was included in the video, after Sheeran discovered that Kari had a piano.

The series, called Autumn Variations Fan Living Room Sessions, dropped on October 2 and is available on You Tube.
