Eddie Howe insists there is no offer in football that could make him leave Newcastle

‘Newcastle is where I want to be’: Eddie Howe insists there is no offer in football that could make him leave St James’ Park after an outstanding season on Tyneside

Eddie Howe says Newcastle is the only job he wants and he intends to stay for as long as the club wish to keep him.

The 45-year-old is in the running for manager of the year after taking the Magpies into the Champions League and to the final of the Carabao Cup this season.

Howe signed a new, long-term contract at the start of this campaign and, with his wife and three sons now settled on Tyneside, he insists there is no offer for which he would quit St James’ Park.

‘My long-term future is very much here,’ he said. ‘There is no other thought in my mind. For as long as I’m wanted, Newcastle is where I want to be. I’m hugely excited about next season and hopefully beyond.’

Howe will continue working after Sunday’s curtain call at Chelsea as he attempts to build a squad strong enough to compete on a domestic and European front.

And he says Newcastle must approach the Champions League with the mindset of winning it.

‘Never say never,’ he said when asked if going all the way was the aim. ‘It’s a brilliant thing to be part of, but you don’t just want to experience it, you want to compete. I will never give a prediction, but we want to be competitive.

‘We definitely want to enjoy it and take a lot from the experience but, when you’re there and you’re in it, you’re there to try and win. That is always our approach.’

Howe, though, has warned that next season will not be easy.

‘It can be tougher (playing in Europe),’ he said. ‘I don’t want to come across as negative or pessimistic in any way. We need to go into next season full of positivity and full of what can be.

‘It is very difficult (to stay top four every season), but it’s not impossible. It’s about improvement – I said the same this time last year. People will always look at league position as the gauge for that, but we look at many other things that go into the team performance.

‘We want to improve and we have to improve quickly. Other clubs that maybe didn’t have the seasons they want will come back fighting.

‘But we want to win, we want to try and win a trophy – we came very close this year. We want to go one step further.’
