Roofers and builders are the least trustworthy tradesmen, according to a survey of householders.
Only around half of those questioned said they trusted them when employing them for the first time.
By comparison, the Which? survey of nearly 1,500 people found 80 per cent trusted electricians and 75 per cent central heating engineers.
The poll found householders’ biggest concern when hiring a tradesman was that they would not turn up on time.
Poor workmanship and ‘being taken for a ride’ were other top concerns.
More than half (55 per cent) were worried that a tradesman would do a bad job and 46 per cent were concerned they would be ripped off.
Plumbers, carpenters and decorators were also among the most trusted, while drain and sewer staff were towards the bottom of the table.
Raj Kakar-Clayton, of Which? Trusted Traders, advised householders to read online reviews, ask for references and have a contract in place before a job starts.
