Elementary school students thought teacher was putting BOOZE in her coffee (but it’s just syrup!)

Elementary school teacher who keeps a bottle of vanilla syrup near her coffee maker learns that her whole class thought she was adding BOOZE to her morning cup of joe

  • Shannon Leigh Maxey teaches at a Jacksonville, Florida elementary school
  • She keeps a Keurig coffee maker in her classroom and has a bottle of vanilla almond-flavored syrup next to it
  • A student recently asked her why she keeps ‘liquor’ there
  • When she asked several other students what they thought it was, they laughed and said ‘beer’

A Florida elementary school teacher had to reassure her class that she was not, in fact, spiking her coffee with liquor every morning, after the youngsters got confused by a bottle of flavored syrup.

Shannon Leigh Maxey, an educator at Woodland Acres Elementary School in Jacksonville, shared the funny misunderstanding on Facebook this month — racking up 35,000 likes in the process.

Shannon likes to flavor her morning coffee with some vanilla almond-flavored syrup, but she says she learned recently that her whole class had assumed she was adding booze to her drink.

A shot of this! Shannon Leigh Maxey keeps flavored syrup near her Keurig in her elementary school classroom — and her students thought it was booze

Shannon detailed the eye-opening exchanging she had with a student in the February 5 post.

‘Mrs. Maxey, I gotta ask you a question, but I have to whisper and you can’t get mad… Why do you keep liquor by your coffee maker?’ the student asked her.

Amused, Shannon quickly corrected the mistake.

‘Girl, that is vanilla syrup for my coffee! You thought I’ve just had liquor out all year?!’ she said.

Shannon included a snap of her Keurig machine, next to which is a bottle of Skinny Syrups vanilla almond-flavored syrup.

The question made the teacher realize she should probably address the bottle with the rest of the class.

Whoops! After one student asked about the 'liquor,' she learned several others thought it was beer, and had to clear up the confusion

‘I was feeling obligated to see if anyone felt that way, so during my small group, I said to five of my boys, “Hey, do y’all know what that is by my coffee maker?”‘ she wrote.

The boys ‘busted out laughing,’ she said.

‘After I forced them to tell me what they thought it was, they said, “We just thought you put beer in your coffee everyday,”‘ she wrote.

'At least I didn't raise a class of snitches,' Shannon quipped

‘At least I didn’t raise a class of snitches,’ Shannon quipped. ‘No one told their parents or admin that Mrs. Maxey was getting lit every morning while teaching!’

Shannon signed off with a string of laughing emojis, and thousands of commenters chimed in to share their own amusement.

‘This made my day. Thanks for the giggles,’ wrote one.

‘You never know what Children are going to say…..so funny…’ said another.

A few also shared similar stories, with one writing: ‘You are not alone. I also love coffee and use the same syrups. My high school students are always asking if it’s liqueur.’

‘I used to keep a bottle of Red Wine Vinegar behind my desk for my salads,’ said another. ‘I had a couple kids ask why I had wine in my room. I had to show them where it said vinegar on it .’
