  • A team from African People and Wildlife found him in Tarangire National Park
  • Video shows them pulling the elephant out with a rope after several attempts

This is the heartwarming moment a group of rangers in a Tanzanian national park teamed up to rescue an elephant.

The young bull elephant found himself trapped in a well in Tarangire National Park, thrashing around with his trunk as he tried to find a way to freedom.

Standing on his hind legs as he peered over the top of the well, the elephant looked mournfully up at the dry land above.

Luckily scouts from the African People and Wildlife team soon came to the rescue to extract him from the well.

The footage from the Tanzanian countryside shows the team offering him branches to eat to help him keep calm, as they set about looking for ways to get him out.

Their first attempt was to dig a path for the elephant to climb out of, but after scrabbling at the walls of the well he just couldn’t make it up the hill.

Next, the team placed some large rocks on the path, hoping to give the elephant some firm ground to stand on as he made his way up the slope.

But the animal was just too exhausted after his earlier efforts, trying bravely to climb up but eventually collapsing back into the pool of water and looking

So it was all hands to the pump for the team’s final effort, as they held a rope across the well in a sort of tug-of-war formation to stop the elephant falling down.

With the sturdy rope behind him, the elephant made one last push up the slope and finally made it to the top.

Exhausted but relieved, the elephant went off to rejoin his herd while the rescue team scattered to make way.
