Eleven people have been rushed to hospital after a serious crash between a mini-bus and a car on a busy Queensland highway.

Multiple ambulance crews were called to the Smithfield Bypass in Smithfield, Cairns at about 10.40am on Wednesday.

Twelve people were treated by paramedics at the scene with five taken to hospital in serious conditions while six are in stable conditions.

One man had to be freed from the bus after the crash after suffering significant leg and hip injuries.

The Smithfield Bypass remains closed in both directions with motorists told to expect long delays throughout the day.

The cause of the crash is being investigated.
