‘Been doing it before it was cool’: Elisabeth Moss wears her Handmaid’s Tale character Offred’s red mask as she recycles it for the Covid pandemic

She’s the star of the hit TV drama The Handmaid’s Tale.

And Elisabeth Moss joked that she’s been wearing masks ‘before it was cool’ on Friday as she shared a picture of herself donning a face covering from the show.

The award-winning actress, 38, took to Instagram to pose in the mask which she wore on set while filming season two of the drama as Offred.

Explaining that she was ahead of the curve with the safety precautions she captioned the post: ‘Been doing it way before it was cool’. 

On the show, Elisabeth’s character June and the other Handmaids wore the masks when they were sent off to the gallows to be punished for rebelling.

The show, which is based on the 1985 Margaret Atwood novel, had just begun filming for season four in Canada when the coronavirus pandemic hit and production was forced to shut down.

Due to the delay in filming the new season, the premiere date is now pushed several months – though the exact date it still undecided. 

Moss stars in the series as Offred, a ‘handmaid’ – women enslaved by the upper class in the country of Gilead (formerly the United States) for the purpose of being forced to bear children for the family due to severely declining birthrates.

The Handmaid’s Tale also stars Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley, Alexis Bledel, Joseph Fiennes and Madeline Brewer.

Elisabeth is also set to star in the Apple TV+ series Shining Girls which she’ll executive produce with Leonardo DiCaprio. 

She will star as a Chicago reporter who survives a brutal assault and then attempts to track down her assailant who turns out to be a time-traveling psychopath in the show based on the 2013 book by Lauren Buekes.  

Last month it was also announced that Elisabeth will executive produce and star in Candy, a limited series crime drama based on a true story.
