Elliot Page reveals he is ‘misgendered all the time’ as he prepares to make film debut since coming out as a transgender man

Elliot Page has revealed he’s still misgendered all the time but it’s not something he takes personally.

The actor, 37, came out as transgender in 2020 and now stars in his first movie role since his transition – Close To You.  

Written and directed by Dominic Savage, Elliot plays Sam, a trans man who is reunited with his family for the first time after his sex change.

The film shows clear parallels between Elliot’s journey and his character, as they both are finally finding acceptance in their lives. 

Speaking to The Guardian about his new role, the Canadian actor touched on the issue of misgendering.

He said: ‘I feel weird because I get misgendered all the time, and I don’t care unless someone’s trying to, you know.’

In the film there is a moment where Sam’s mother, played by Wendy Crewson, accidentally misgenders him.

When asked if it was a slip of the tongue, Elliot replied: ‘I want to be clear: I wouldn’t correct Wendy as me. 

‘I’d be like: “It’s fine. We’re going to move on from the moment. It takes a second.” But, you know, I’m not me. I’m Sam here.

‘And that moment was so perfect because that’s what happens.’

Opening up about the similarities in the film to his personal life, Elliot explained that his own mother sometimes has similar slip ups but ‘does her best’.

‘She’s pretty good. I’m like, ‘Of course, it’s going to take you a second, mom. It’s fine. You don’t need to beat yourself up about it!’

Close To You is Elliot’s first TV role since he appeared in 2017’s Flatliners, a remake of the 1990 Kiefer Sutherland and Kevin Bacon classic.  

Elliot – who shot to global stardom in the hit movie Juno – came out as transgender and nonbinary in a powerful post on social media in December 2020.

He wrote in a lengthy post on Instagram: ‘I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self. 

The Hollywood star added that his ‘joy is real, but it is also fragile,’ due to the discrimination and violence that transgender people face. 

He continued: ‘I love that I am trans. And I love that I am queer. 

‘And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive.

‘To all the trans people who deal with harassment, self-loathing, abuse and the threat of violence every day: I see you, I love you and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better.’

Throughout his transition, he starred in the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy and announced his character would come out as trans in the third season.  

The fourth and final season of the series landed on the global streaming site on August 4.
