Elon Musk is pictured for the first time since Grimes split and surrogate baby news

Tesla billionaire Elon Musk put on a tense display on Thursday night as he was seen publicly for the first time since his ex-partner Grimes revealed earlier in the day that they had secretly welcomed a second child via surrogate, before ending their romance for a second time.

Exclusive images show the 50-year-old entrepreneur making a late-night arrival at his SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California – more than 1,300 miles away from the Austin, Texas, home where Grimes is currently living with their two children, son X Æ A-12, known as ‘X’, and newborn daughter Exa Dark Sideræl, who they call ‘Y’.

Elon, who is worth an estimated $229.1 billion, was seen sporting a casual T-shirt, dark trousers, and black sneakers as he exited a Tesla outside of the vast property at 10:30PM PST, less than 12 hours after singer Grimes, 33, went public with the news of their split – while revealing details about the arrival of their second child in a lengthy Vanity Fair interview that also saw her lay bare the businessman’s thrifty lifestyle.

In the piece, the singer opened up about her ‘fluid’ relationship with Elon, who she referred to as her ‘boyfriend’, explaining at the time that the couple were still romantically involved and co-parenting their two children together, despite living in separate homes.

She also spoke about the then-couple’s new arrival, but only after the Vanity Fair writer who conducted the interview at Grimes’ new Austin home overheard the baby girl crying in an upstairs room.

However, just four hours after the story was published, the singer revealed on Twitter that she and Elon had split for a second time in the weeks since the interview took place.

‘Me and E have broken up *again* since the writing of this article,’ she wrote in a series of tweets, which were ‘liked’ by her ex Elon, adding: ‘But he’s my best friend and the love of my life.’

Other than liking his ex-girlfriend’s tweets, Elon has yet to publicly comment on the split, or on any other details of the interview, including the birth of his newborn daughter, who is sister to their first-born child, X.

However the strained look on his face on Thursday night was worth a thousand words, suggesting that the shock news of his baby girl’s arrival and his subsequent split from Grimes may have caused the billionaire a fair amount of stress.

Grimes and Elon began dating in 2018 (seen in May of that year) but reportedly split for the first time in September 2021. The former couple, who had a son, X Æ A-12, in May 2020, then reunited before welcoming a daughter via surrogate in December

Elon, who also briefly spoke with the Vanity Fair interviewer for the piece, saw several other details about his personal life thrown into the spotlight by his former partner, who told the publication that the Tesla billionaire ‘lives at times below the poverty line’, suggesting that this was one of the main reasons why they chose to live in separate homes while they were still in a relationship.

She called attention to Elon’s desire to live as thrifty a lifestyle as possible, explaining that she felt uncomfortable over his decision to move them into ‘a very insecure $40,000’ home where they were subject to scrutiny from neighbors.

‘Bro does not live like a billionaire. Bro lives at times below the poverty line,’ she said. ‘To the point where I was like, can we not live in a very insecure $40,000 house? Where the neighbors, like, film us, and there’s no security, and I’m eating peanut butter for eight days in a row?’

The singer insisted they didn’t live like billionaires when together, revealing that Elon was funneling a large portion of his money into his SpaceX Mars program, which is dedicated to landing humans on the planet within the next four years.

‘The Mars project is hard. There’s no income for it,’ Grimes said.

‘There’s no way for it to make money. [His Mars project] is for the benefit of humanity, and it’s dangerous and it’s expensive, and people are like, “He’s hoarding money!” No, he’s spending everything on R&D.’

The billionaire CEO previously announced that he had systematically sold off most his assets including several California properties amounting to more than $100 million – as well as $15 billion worth of Tesla stock – and moved into the unassuming, property, reported to be worth $50,000, last June.

Musk, who is the CEO of both Tesla and SpaceX, famously declared last year that he would ‘own no house’ and went on to sell off his nine California mansions for a total of $144 million.

The meaning of Exa Dark Sideræl in Grimes’ own words

Exa: A nod to the supercomputing term exaFLOPS, which is ‘the ability to perform one quintillion floating-point operations per second’.

Dark: A reference to dark matter and ‘the unknown’. ‘People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe.’

Sideræl: Pronounced sigh-deer-ee-el, this name is a ‘more elven spelling’ of sidereal, which Grimes describes as ‘the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time’. It is also a nod to the singer’s favorite Lord of the Rings character, Galadriel.

‘My primary home is literally a ~50k house in Boca Chica/Starbase [in Texas] that I rent from SpaceX,’ he wrote in a June tweet.

After unloading all of his properties sans the one in the Bay Area, Musk moved to Austin in June, and touted his new Tiny House on social media, but neglected to post any photos of the paltry digs – supposedly situated a stone’s throw from the company’s bourgeoning new headquarters and SpaceX’s Boca Chica launch site.

Musk, the richest man in the world, is worth about $240 billion on paper, but much of that is in his Tesla stock holdings.

In her tweets, Grimes insisted that she had not intended to reveal the news about her daughter’s arrival, nor open up about her relationship with Elon, explaining that she ‘did [the interview] to speak about her work’.

However, after writer Devon Gordon repeatedly heard the couple’s newborn baby crying in an upstairs room during the interview, the singer eventually confirmed that she and Elon had welcomed a second child.

Having initially told the publication that she was ‘not at liberty to speak on… whatever is going on with family stuff’, Grimes admitted that she had welcomed a daughter with Elon, before later sharing details about the newborn’s quirky name.

According to the singer, the little girl’s unique first name, Exa, was inspired by the supercomputing term exaFLOPS, which is ‘the ability to perform one quintillion floating-point operations per second’, while her second name Dark, is a nod to dark matter and ‘the unknown’.

‘People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe,’ she told the magazine.

Finally, Sideræl, which is pronounced sigh-deer-ee-el, is a ‘more elven spelling’ of sidereal, which Grimes described as ‘the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time’.

Their daughter’s third name is also a reference to Grimes’ favorite Lord of the Rings character, the elf Galadriel.

The ex-couple will call their baby daughter ‘Y’ for short, following the trend they started with the arrival of their first-born child, son X Æ A-12, who Grimes gave birth to in May 2020, and whom she and Elon call ‘X’.

'Bro does not live like a billionaire. Bro lives at times below the poverty line,' she said. 'To the point where I was like, can we not live in a very insecure $40,000 house? Where the neighbors, like, film us, and there’s no security'

In her tweets, Grimes explained she had not meant for the publication to find out about Y's birth; the writer who interviewed the singer at her Austin home revealed in the piece that he only learned about it when he heard the baby girl crying upstairs

The singer stated that she will no longer do 'any traditional press', having made clear in the article that she plans to keep her daughter hidden from the public eye

She also insisted that she had not meant for the publication to find out about Y’s birth; the writer who interviewed the singer at her Austin home revealed in the piece that he only learned about it when he heard the baby girl crying upstairs

However they were forced to change the spelling of their son’s name in order to comply with California law, which prohibits the use of any numbers of symbols in a name.

Instead, they revealed just a few weeks after the baby was born that his birth certificate would be registered under the name X AE A-Xii – using the Roman numeral version of the number ’12’ and changing the character æ to AE.

Grimes reveals the meaning behind her son X Æ A-12’s name

X: This represents ‘the unknown variable’.

Æ: Grimes’ ‘elven spelling of AI’, which represents both ‘love and/or artificial intelligence’.

A-12: The ‘precursor to [the] SR-17′, which is Grimes’ and Elon’s ‘favorite aircraft’ because it has ‘no weapons, no defenses, just speed’ and is ‘great in battle, but non-violent’. A also represents Archangel, which is Grimes’ favorite of her own songs.

If Elon and Grimes choose to register their newborn daughter’s birth certificate in Texas, they will have to alter the spelling of her name, removing the symbol æ once again in order to comply with state regulations, which only allow English characters to be used in a name.

Grimes conceded to Vanity Fair that the pair’s unique choice of names are not to everyone’s tastes, admitting that she is prepared for her daughter to one day try and change her name.

In the meantime, the baby girl has already been given a few alternatives, with the singer revealing that she and Elon also refer to their daughter as Sailor Mars, which was inspired by the manga cartoon, Sailor Moon.

The musician added that she had chosen ‘dream’ name for her daughter, Odysseus, before she and Elon settled on the moniker Exa Dark Sideræl.

Grimes’ surprise baby announcement comes less than six months after the couple reportedly split up for the first time, having been dating for three years.

At the time of the interview, which is thought to have been conducted in the past two months, the singer described her relationship with the tech entrepreneur as ‘fluid’, explaining that while she ‘would probably refer to [Elon] as her boyfriend’, the couple were not living together and each ‘had their own thing going on’.

While she and Elon were not living together even while they were in a relationship, Grimes shared that she relocated in December from her home in Los Angeles to a property in Austin, Texas, where she is currently residing in a ‘sleepy neighborhood cul-de-sac’ that is located ‘a short drive’ away from Tesla’s factory.

‘I would probably refer to him as my boyfriend, but we’re very fluid,’ she said. ‘We live in separate houses. We’re best friends. We see each other all the time…. We just have our own thing going on, and I don’t expect other people to understand it.

‘This is the best it’s ever been…. We just need to be free.’

According to writer Devin Gordon, who interviewed Grimes at her home for the publication, the news about Y’s birth was only brought to light after he overheard the baby girl crying upstairs while speaking to the singer about her upcoming music.

In the article, he describes the moment, writing: ‘About 15 minutes after we sit down to discuss her new music, a “space opera” due this spring-ish tentatively called Book 1, I hear what sounds vaguely like a lone cry from an infant upstairs. I think I notice Grimes wince, but I say nothing and move on. Could be anything.

‘Another few minutes pass… I hear it again. This time it’s multiple cries, and it’s unmistakable. I’ve got two kids. That’s a baby. And I can tell by the frozen look on my host’s face that she heard it too.’

Gordon writes that he then asked Grimes whether she ‘had another baby in her life’, which the singer initially refused to confirm, citing her desire to let the ‘kids stay out of’ the public eye.

However, after Y continued to cry – while a woman, presumably a nanny or relative, upstairs tried to quiet her – Grimes confirmed to the writer that she and Elon had in fact welcomed a second child, before later sharing her full name, and its meaning, via text message.

Interestingly, Grimes told Vanity Fair that she and Elon were hoping to have more children in the future – ‘at least three of four’ – and she hinted that X and Y are currently splitting their time between their parents’ homes, noting during the interview that her son was spending time with his father, while she was caring for their newborn daughter.

Both Grimes and Elon – who also spoke briefly to the Vanity Fair writer – said that their separate living situation was the best solution for both of them, explaining that they each have very different needs and likes when it comes to creating a home.

While Elon likes things to be ‘reasonably neat’, Grimes is described as taking a more creative, artistic approach to her home. She also enjoys Japanese art and anime, which the Tesla founder explained he ‘doesn’t like’.

The singer also took issue with the Tesla founder’s penny-pinching lifestyle, recalling a time when they were living together in Los Angeles and he refused to buy a new mattress, despite her telling him that her side of the bed had a hole in it.

Late baby boy Nevada Alexander Musk: The Tesla founder’s ex-wife Justine gave birth to their first child, son Nevada, in 2002, however the newborn died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) at just 10 weeks old.

Describing her role in her son’s life, Grimes said that she has taken responsibility for ‘handling his creative stuff’, while she notes that Elon ‘really sees [X] as a protégé’.

Although the singer did not explain exactly why she and Elon chose to welcome their second child via surrogate, she revealed that she struggled with some severe health issues in the final month of her pregnancy with X, explaining that she was left unable to walk because her unborn son was ‘pressing on her nerves’, causing her to keep collapsing.

She also suffered from a ‘scary’ hemorrhage that was so severe, the singer believed she was going to die.

As well as his two children with Grimes, billionaire SpaceX founder Elon is also father to five son with his first wife Justine, whom he divorced in 2008 after eight years of marriage.

The former couple share twins Griffin and Xavier, born in 2004, and triplets Kai, Saxon and Damian, born in 2006; all five of the children were conceived via IVF.

They also welcomed a baby boy named Nevada in 2002, but the newborn tragically died of sudden infant death syndrome in 2002.

Following his split from Justine, Elon began dating British actress Talulah Riley, whom he married and divorced a total of two times within six years.

Talulah, who was a virgin when she began dating Elon in 2008, first tied the knot with the Tesla billionaire in 2010, however their first marriage broke down and ended in 2012, when she reportedly walked away with $16 million as part of their divorce settlement.

By the following summer they had remarried but then in December 2014 she sued for divorce a second time, only to withdraw her lawsuit the following year.

Then, in March 2016, Talulah, now 36, filed for divorce a third time and the pair split permanently; the couple did not have any children together.

Grimes is determined to keep her daughter’s life as private as possible – unlike her son X who has been featured numerous times on his father’s social media accounts, and has been seen out in public with his parents on several occasions.

Grimes said in her interview that X was spending time with Elon, who as of last year is said to be living in a 75-square-foot $50,000 'Tiny House' close to SpaceX's Starbase site

The singer noted that her son ‘is just out there’, largely because Elon has been ‘bringing him to everything’, however she is eager to ensure that her daughter will not have to face the same public scrutiny, even stating that ‘the best situation’ for the parents would be for ‘her to train the girl’ and for ‘him to train the boy’.

She also requested privacy for her infant daughter on Twitter, writing: ‘I did this to speak [about] my work, not “reveal all” haha. Def held back a lot, contrary [to] headline. & didn’t mean for them [to] find out about my daughter so please respect her privacy as I’d love her to be able to live as private of a life as possible.’

Elon’s five other children with ex-wife Justine have largely managed to remain out of the spotlight, although it was revealed in 2018 that all of boys were being educated at a radical, ultra-exclusive school set up by the Tesla founder at his SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California.

The ‘experimental’ school, which is called Ad Astra, meaning ‘to the stars’ in Latin, was set up in 2014. As of 2018, it was being attended by a very small, select group of students, including Elon’s five sons and the offspring of several SpaceX employees.

Although few details about the school’s methods have been revealed, reports suggest that its students are subjected to a host of very unconventional teaching techniques.

Previous reports on Ad Astra state that the children are allowed to skip any subjects they don’t like, spend time building flamethrowers and learn how to ‘defeat evil A.I.s’.

Elon created Ad Astra to ‘exceed traditional school metrics on all relevant subject matter through unique project-based learning experiences,’ according to a previously unreported document filed with the IRS and uncovered by tech-focused publication Ars Technica.

REVEALED: The meaning of Elon Musk and Grimes’ VERY quirky name for newborn daughter Exa Dark Sideræl, whose moniker was inspired by supercomputing, dark matter, Lord of the Rings, and ‘deep space time’

By Erica Tempesta for DailyMail.com

Elon Musk and Grimes were inspired by supercomputing, dark matter, and ‘deep space time’ when choosing their one-of-a-kind name for their newborn daughter Exa Dark Sideræl, whom they are calling ‘Y’ for short.

According to Grimes, the baby girl’s three names are all rooted in science, with one nod to the singer’s love of Lord of the Rings and elven mythology.

Here, FEMAIL reveals the true meaning behind each of the baby girl’s three monikers.

The newborn's first name, Exa, is a reference to the computer term exaFLOPS, the capability of performing one quintillion floating-point operations per second

The newborn’s first name, Exa, is a reference to the computer term exaFLOPS, the capability of performing one quintillion floating-point operations per second

EXA: A nod to supercomputing

Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher, explained their newborn’s quirky first name, Exa, is a reference to the supercomputing term exaFLOPS, the capability of performing one quintillion floating-point operations per second.

The decimal prefix ‘exa’ denotes the number one quintillion, which is defined in the U.S. as 1000000000000000000 or 1 followed by 18 zeros.

FLOPS, meanwhile, is an abbreviation of floating-point operations per second. It refers to the theoretical peak performance of computers.

Their daughter’s second name, Dark, is a nod to dark matter and ‘the unknown.’

‘People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe,’ Grimes told the magazine.

Dark matter is an invisible substance that is thought to comprise 85 percent of the universe’s mass, according to NASA.

It is thought to be the gravitational glue that holds the galaxies together, though it has never been directly observed by scientists.

The enigmatic material is invisible because it does not absorb, reflect, or emit light.

Astronomers have been able to infer its existence because of its gravitational effects on known matter — any physical substance that has mass and takes up space. A smartphone and the human body are both examples of matter.

‘Shine a torch in a completely dark room, and you will see only what the torch illuminates. That does not mean that the room around you does not exist. Similarly we know dark matter exists but have never observed it directly,’ The European Space Agency explained in a 2013 article.

Finally, Sideræl, which is pronounced sigh-deer-ee-el, is a 'more elven spelling' of sidereal. Sidereal astronomy is a branch of astronomy that studies the origin, nature, and relationship of the stars. A sidereal day (pictured) measures the rotation of Earth relative to the stars

Founded by German-British William Herschel, sidereal astronomy is a branch of astronomy that studies the origin, nature, and relationship of the stars.

‘A sidereal day measures the rotation of Earth relative to the stars rather than the sun,’ according to EarthSky. ‘It helps astronomers keep time and know where to point their telescopes without worrying about where Earth is in its orbit.’

A solar day — the time it takes for the Earth to make one complete revolution on its axis in respect to the sun — is around 24 hours, while a sidereal day lasts 23 hours 56 minutes and 4.1 seconds.

Their daughter’s third name is also a reference to Grimes’ favorite Lord of the Rings character, the elf Galadriel, who ‘chooses to abdicate the ring.’

The J. R. R. Tolkien character was one of the great elves from Middle-earth who was known for her transcendent beauty, knowledge, and power.

Actress Cate Blanchett played Galadriel in director Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.

REVEALED: Exa Dark Sideræl’s nicknames

Grimes and Musk are calling their baby girl Y for short, similar to how they nicknamed their son, X Æ A-12, ‘X’ after he was born in May 2020.

They were forced to change the spelling of their son’s name in order to comply with California law, which prohibits the use of any numbers or symbols in a name.

Just a few weeks after the baby was born, they revealed that his birth certificate would be registered under the name X AE A-Xii, using the Roman numeral version of the number ’12’ and changing the character æ to AE.

If Musk and Grimes choose to register their newborn daughter’s birth certificate in Texas, they will have to alter the spelling of her name, once again removing the symbol æ in order to comply with state regulations that only allow the use of English characters in a name.

They have also been calling their baby girl Sailor Mars, a reference to the manga cartoon Sailor Moon.

Grimes conceded to Vanity Fair that their unique choice of names is not to everyone’s tastes, admitting that she is prepared for her daughter to one day want to change it.

She added that they might end up changing the name themselves before the interview came out. The mom, who was pushing for the name Odysseus, explained that Exa Dark Sideræl was a compromise, but she thinks it might be boring.

‘I was fighting for Odysseus Musk,’ she told the magazine. ‘A girl named Odysseus is my dream.’

Tesla billionaire Elon Musk and his ex-girlfriend Grimes have secretly welcomed a second child together via surrogate – a baby girl named Exa Dark Sideræl, or ‘Y’ for short – the singer has revealed.

The 33-year-old musician shared the exciting news about their newest arrival during a recent interview with Vanity Fair, which hit stands this week.

While chatting with the mag, she revealed that their daughter was born in December and referred to Elon, 50, as her ‘boyfriend,’ however, hours after it came out, Grimes took to Twitter to state that they had broken up since doing the interview.

Elon and Grimes’ have a long and complicated relationship, and this isn’t the first time that they have split.

Back in September – less than six months before the surprise baby announcement – Elon told Page Six that he and Grimes were ‘semi-separated,’ after dating for three-years. There were also rumors that they had gone their separate ways briefly in 2018.

Despite their tangled on-and-off again romance, the couple has continued to grow their family. This is their second child together – as they previously welcomed a son named X Æ A-12 in May 2020, whom they call ‘X.’

Aside from his complex dating life, Elon’s living condition is also somewhat of a mystery.

It is currently unclear where exactly the business mogul – who has an estimated net worth of around $221 billion – is living.

He announced last year that he was ‘selling almost all physical possessions,’ including several California properties amounting to more than $100 million – and $15 billion worth of Tesla stock.

He purportedly then moved into a 75-square-foot $50,000 ‘Tiny House’ close to SpaceX’s Starbase rocket-launch site in Boca Chica, Texas.

Elon, who founded aerospace manufacturer in 2002, has five other kids from his previous marriage to author Justine Wilson, whom he split from in 2008.

They suffered heartbreak within the first two years of their marriage, when their 10-week old son tragically died in his sleep.

After their divorce, she accused the entrepreneur – who has been called the wealthiest person in the world by Forbes – of treating her more like an ’employee’ than a ‘wife,’ while slamming him for not showing her ‘equality’ or ‘partnership.’

He then began dating English actress Talulah Riley, whom he married and divorced two different times within six years.

He was also briefly linked to Amber Heard after she split from Johnny Depp. The actor later accused the two of having an affair – which they have both denied.

From his multiple marriages to his seven children, here’s what we know about the billionaire’s intricate and elaborate personal life.

How Elon’s first marriage to ex-wife Justine ended in turmoil after birth of six kids – including infant son they lost to SIDS at 10 weeks old

Elon and Justine met while they were both attending Queen's University, and they tied the knot in 2000. Then, the couple tragically lost their 10-week old son, Nevada Alexander, in 2002

Elon and Justine Wilson, now 49, met while they were both attending Queen’s University, and they tied the knot in 2000.

While discussing the day they first met, Justine described Elon as a ‘clean-cut, upper-class boy with a South African accent who appeared in front of her one afternoon as she was leaping up the steps to her dorm,’ during an essay for Marie Claire, which was written in 2010.

‘He said we’d met at a party I knew I hadn’t been to. (Years later, he would confess that he had noticed me from across the common room and decided he wanted to meet me.)

‘He invited me out for ice cream. I said yes, but then blew him off with a note on my dorm-room door.

‘Several hours later, my head bent over my Spanish text in an overheated room in the student center, I heard a polite cough behind me.

‘Elon was smiling awkwardly, two chocolate-chip ice cream cones dripping down his hands. He’s not a man who takes no for an answer.’

They couple tragically lost their 10-week old son, Nevada Alexander, in 2002, when he died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

They then welcomed twins Griffin and Xavier, now 17, in 2004, and triplets Kai, Saxon, and Damian, now 15, in 2006; all five of the children were conceived via IVF.

In her essay, Justine recalled feeling more like an ’employee’ than a ‘wife’ to Elon.

‘He had grown up in the male-dominated culture of South Africa, and the will to compete and dominate that made him so successful in business did not magically shut off when he came home,’ she explained.

‘This, and the vast economic imbalance between us, meant that in the months following our wedding, a certain dynamic began to take hold.

‘Elon’s judgment overruled mine, and he was constantly remarking on the ways he found me lacking. “I am your wife,” I told him repeatedly, “not your employee.”

‘”If you were my employee,” he said just as often, “I would fire you.”‘

She said that what ultimately led to their divorce in 2008 was a car accident, where her first thought was, ‘My husband is going to kill me.’

She added: ‘In my mind’s eye, I could suddenly see myself: a woman who’d gotten very thin, and very blonde, stumbling out of a very expensive car with the front-left wheel smashed in.

‘I barely recognized myself. I had turned into a trophy wife – and I sucked at it. I wasn’t detail-oriented enough to maintain a perfect house or be a perfect hostess.

‘I could no longer hide my boredom when the men talked and the women smiled and listened. I wasn’t interested in Botox or makeup or reducing the appearance of the scars from my C-sections.

‘And no matter how many highlights I got, Elon pushed me to be blonder. “Go platinum,” he kept saying, and I kept refusing.

‘Not long after the accident, I sat on our bed with my knees pulled up to my chest and tears in my eyes. I told Elon, in a soft voice that was nonetheless filled with conviction, that I needed our life to change.

‘I didn’t want to be a sideline player in the multimillion-dollar spectacle of my husband’s life. I wanted equality. I wanted partnership. I wanted to love and be loved, the way we had before he made all his millions.’

After one month of counseling, Elon filed for divorce. As of 2010 when the essay was written, Justine said she and Elon were ‘estranged,’ but that she did not regret their relationship.

‘Although I am estranged from Elon – when it comes to the children, I deal with his assistant – I don’t regret my marriage,’ she wrote.

‘I’ve worked through some anger, both at Elon for rendering me so disposable, and at myself for buying into a fairy tale when I should have known better.

‘But I will always respect the brilliant and visionary person that he is. I also can’t regret the divorce (our case was bifurcated, which means that even though the property issues aren’t settled, our marriage is legally dead).

‘Elon and I share custody of the children, who are thriving. I feel grounded now, and deeply grateful for my life.’

Their five children have largely managed to remain out of the spotlight, although it was revealed in 2018 that all of boys were being educated at a radical, ultra-exclusive school set up by the Tesla founder at his SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California.

The ‘experimental’ school, which is called Ad Astra, meaning ‘to the stars’ in Latin, was set up in 2014.

As of 2018, it was being attended by a very small, select group of students, including Elon’s five sons and the offspring of several SpaceX employees.

Although few details about the school’s methods have been revealed, some reports suggest that its students are subjected to a host of very unconventional teaching techniques.

Previous reports on Ad Astra also stated that the children are allowed to skip any subjects they don’t like, spend time building flamethrowers and learn how to ‘defeat evil A.I.s.’

Elon created Ad Astra to ‘exceed traditional school metrics on all relevant subject matter through unique project-based learning experiences,’ according to a previously unreported document filed with the IRS and uncovered by tech-focused publication Ars Technica.

‘I remember thinking that this guy probably didn’t get to talk to young actresses a lot and that he seemed quite nervous,’ Talulah said of the night they met.

‘I decided to be really nice to him and give him a nice evening. Little did I know that he’d spoken to a lot of pretty girls in his life.’

Talulah, now 36 – who was a virgin when she began dating Elon in 2008 – first tied the knot with the Tesla architect in 2010.

However, their first marriage ended in 2012, when she reportedly walked away with $16 million as part of a divorce settlement.

‘It was an amazing four years. I will love you forever. You will make someone very happy one day,’ he tweeted at the time.

By the following summer, they had remarried. But then, in December 2014, she filed for divorce a second time, only to withdraw her lawsuit the following year.

In March 2016, Talulah requested a divorce a third time, and the pair split for good; the couple did not have any children together.

Elon told Forbes at the time, ‘We took some time apart for several months to see if absence makes the heart grow fonder, and unfortunately it did not.

‘I still love her, but I’m not in love with her. And I can’t really give her what she wants.’

He also called her ‘a great woman’ and said he will ‘always be friends’ with her.

At the time, he said he had no interest in marrying again for a while, adding, ‘I think it would be extremely unwise for me to jump into a third marriage without spending considerable time figuring out if the third one will work.

‘It was never my intention to have a short marriage. Essentially I’d want to be super sure before getting married again, but I certainly would love to be in a relationship. For sure.’

From third divorce to a rumored affair with Amber Heard that ended in heartbreak for the Tesla billionaire

Elon dated actress Amber Heard, 35, for several months in late 2016 and early 2017, after he reportedly pursued her for many years.

Amber’s ex-husband Johnny later accused Amber of cheating on him with Elon while they were still married, but both of Elon and Amber denied the affair.

They split in the summer of 2017, and afterwards, he told Rolling Stone in November 2017 that he was ‘really in love’ with Amber and that their breakup ‘hurt bad.’

‘She broke up with me more than I broke up with her, I think,’ he told the outlet at the time.

‘I’ve been in severe emotional pain for the last few weeks. Severe. It took every ounce of will to be able to do the Model 3 event and not look like the most depressed guy around. For most of that day, I was morbid.’

He continued, ‘If I’m not in love, if I’m not with a long-term companion, I cannot be happy.

‘I will never be happy without having someone. Going to sleep alone kills me. It’s not like I don’t know what that feels like: Being in a big empty house, and the footsteps echoing through the hallway, no one there – and no one on the pillow next to you. F**k. How do you make yourself happy in a situation like that?’

‘Best friends’ forever? Elon and Grimes’ on-again-off-again romance ends with second split months after birth of their second child – but she insists he’s still ‘the love of her life’

Elon and Grimes began dating in April 2018 after reportedly meeting online, a month before they made their red carpet debut at the Met Gala (pictured)

Elon and Grimes began dating in April 2018 after reportedly meeting online, a month before they made their red carpet debut at the Met Gala (pictured)

Elon and Grimes began dating in April 2018, a month before they made their red carpet debut at the Met Gala.

A source told Page Six at the time that they met online ‘through a joke about artificial intelligence that Musk had planned to tweet, but discovered Grimes had already made.’

Rumors started to swirl that they had split by that fall, after the pair unfollowed each other on Twitter, however, Grimes insisted that they were still together during a March 2019 interview with Wall Street Journal.

Then, in January 2020, she announced that she was pregnant with their first child via Instagram, when she shared a pic of her baby bump, with no caption. They then welcomed their son in May of the same year, who is now 22-month old.

After his birth, the couple was forced to change the spelling of their son’s name in order to comply with California law, which prohibits the use of any numbers of symbols in a name.

Instead of X Æ A-12, they revealed just a few weeks after the baby was born that his birth certificate would be registered under the name X AE A-Xii – using the Roman numeral version of the number ’12’ and changing the character æ to AE.

Describing her role in her son’s life, Grimes told Vanity Fair that she has taken responsibility for ‘handling his creative stuff,’ while she notes that Elon ‘really sees [X] as a protégé.’

More than a year after welcoming their son – in September 2021 – Elon told Page Six that they were ‘semi-separated.’

‘We are semi-separated but still love each other, see each other frequently and are on great terms,’ he said.

‘It’s mostly that my work at SpaceX and Tesla requires me to be primarily in Texas or traveling overseas and her work is primarily in LA. She’s staying with me now and Baby X is in the adjacent room.’

Grimes relocated in December from her home in Los Angeles to a property in Austin, Texas, where she is currently residing in a ‘sleepy neighborhood cul-de-sac’ that is located ‘a short drive’ away from Tesla’s factory.

They then welcomed their second child via surrogate that same month.

According to the singer, the newborn’s quirky first name, Exa, was inspired by the supercomputing term exaFLOPS, which is ‘the ability to perform one quintillion floating-point operations per second,’ while her second name Dark, is a nod to dark matter and ‘the unknown.’

‘People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe,’ she told the magazine.

Finally, Sideræl, which is pronounced sigh-deer-ee-el, is a ‘more elven spelling’ of sidereal, which Grimes described as ‘the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time.’

Their daughter’s third name is also a reference to Grimes’ favorite Lord of the Rings character, the elf Galadriel.

The couple will call their baby daughter ‘Y’ for short, following the trend they started with the arrival of their first-born child, son X Æ A-12, who Grimes gave birth to in May 2020, and whom she and Elon call ‘X.’

If Elon and Grimes choose to register their newborn daughter’s birth certificate in Texas, they will have to alter the spelling of her name, like they did with their son, removing the symbol æ once again in order to comply with state regulations, which only allow English characters to be used in a name.

During the time of the Vanity Fair interview, Grimes said she ‘would probably refer to Elon as her boyfriend,’ adding that the relationship was ‘very fluid.’

She said: ‘We live in separate houses. We’re best friends. We see each other all the time…. We just have our own thing going on, and I don’t expect other people to understand it. This is the best it’s ever been…. We just need to be free.’

However, after it came out, she took to Twitter to reveal that they had since broken up.

‘Me and E have broken up *again* since the writing of this article,’ she wrote on Thursday. ‘But he’s my best friend and the love of my life.’

Both Grimes and Elon noted to Vanity Fair that their current separate living situation is the best for both of them, explaining that they each have very different needs and likes when it comes to creating a home.

While Elon likes things to be ‘reasonably neat,’ Grimes is described as taking a more creative, artistic approach to her home. She also enjoys Japanese art and anime, which the Tesla founder explained he ‘doesn’t like.’

While chatting with the mag, the singer admitted that she took issue with the Tesla founder’s penny-pinching lifestyle, recalling a time when they were living together in Los Angeles when he refused to buy a new mattress, despite her telling him that her side of the bed had a hole in it.

She added that Elon’s decision to live in an ‘insecure’ house where their neighbors were able to film them and where they had no security was not something that she felt comfortable with.

‘Bro does not live like a billionaire,’ she said. ‘Bro lives at times below the poverty line. To the point where I was like, can we not live in a very insecure $40,000 house?’

Then, in January 2020, she announced that she was pregnant with their first child via Instagram. They then welcomed their son, whom they call X, in May of the same year

Then, in January 2020, she announced that she was pregnant with their first child via Instagram. They then welcomed their son, whom they call X, in May of the same year

Although the singer did not explain exactly why she and Elon chose to welcome their second child via surrogate, she revealed that she struggled with some severe health issues in the final month of her pregnancy with X, explaining that she was left unable to walk because her unborn son was ‘pressing on her nerves,’ which caused her to keep collapsing.

She also suffered from a ‘scary’ hemorrhage during his birth, which was so severe, the singer believed she was going to die.

Now, Grimes is determined to keep her daughter’s life as private as possible – unlike her son X who has been featured numerous times on his father’s social media accounts, and has been seen out in public with his parents on several occasions.

She noted that her son ‘is just out there,’ largely because Elon has been ‘bringing him to everything,’ however she is eager to ensure that her daughter will not have to face the same public scrutiny, even stating that ‘the best situation’ for the parents would be for ‘her to train the girl’ and for ‘him to train the boy.’

‘Didn’t mean for them to find out about my daughter so please respect her privacy as I’d love her to be able to live as private of a life as possible,’ she added on Twitter, while discussing the article.

‘This is the last time I’ll do any traditional press [cause] I’m a pretty private person. Haven’t done press in a long time [cause] my personal life is so mad and I think it’s hard to foreground my work but also maybe it’s all intertwined at this point.’
