Emeli Sande reveals why she had to cancel her wedding to girlfriend Yoana Karemova a year after their engagement

Emeli Sande has revealed why she decided to call off her wedding to girlfriend Yoana Karemova.

The singer, 36, announced her engagement to the classical pianist in September last year, six months after Emeli revealed she was part of the LGBT community and in a same-sex relationship with Yoana.

Yet they shocked fans this month when it was revealed that they had to call off their big day.

Appearing on Monday’s episode of Lorraine, Emeli explained: ‘We always planned that next year would make more sense with the album coming out.

‘We are really excited it’s so nice to enjoy the love, Yoana is so supportive of my music, it makes such a difference. It’s a beautiful connection.’

Speaking to The Metro, Emeli added: ‘We’ve kind of put them on hold until I get this album out and we do the shows this year but we’ll probably start planning next year or early next year.’

Despite the fact her pianist partner shunned convention with the low-key proposal, Emeli insisted: ‘It was a very romantic moment.’

At the time Emeli said: ‘I was driving. I was indicating to turn left and she proposed — very cool, nonchalant. She said: “Well, what do you say — will you be my wife?” And she opened out this beautiful ring.’

Emeli announced the news last month showing off her dazzling diamond and ruby ring as she revealed on social media: ‘I said yes!’

The happy news came just six months after she announced she was part of the LGBT community and in a same-sex relationship with Yoana.

It will be Emeli’s second marriage as she was previously wed to marine biologist Adam Gouraguine.

The couple went their separate ways in 2014 after dating for more than a decade and exchanging vows in 2012.

When she came out in March, Emeli was asked if she now considers herself to be bisexual, to which she said: ‘I’m not sure what I identify as but I guess so. I just feel like I should fall in love with whoever I fall in love with.’

Emeli met Yoana while studying classical music and recently admitted that she is ‘happier than ever’ in the relationship.

She revealed their relationship in sweet Instagram post on April 2, confessing that her ‘soulmate’ had given her ‘the strength she needed’.

Posting a loved-up snap of the pair, the Next To Me singer wrote: ‘I’m so lucky to have found my soul mate Yoana, she’s such an extraordinary woman! Falling in love with her gave me the strength I needed!

‘Feels so good to be in love and I feel happier than ever. I’m deeply touched by all your messages of love and support. Thank you so much for your acceptance and kind wishes.

‘Feels like a huge weight has been lifted, here’s to a new beginning in truth and happiness,’ she concluded the caption.
