EMILY PRESCOTT: Is Channel 4’s ultra-stylish boss Alex Mahon ready to join fashion house Chloe?

As the highly paid boss of Channel 4, Alex Mahon has become known for her expensive tastes in jewellery and high fashion.

Now the television industry is rife with rumours that the stylish executive is ready to jump ship and join French designer label Chloe in a senior position.

Ms Mahon, who turns 50 this month, is already a non-executive board member of another French haute-couture brand, Chanel, which she joined in June 2021 as Channel 4 was struggling with post-Covid financial difficulties.

Her future was the hot topic of conversation at the recent Edinburgh Television Festival, with well-connected industry executives trading gossip. One of them tells me: ‘There has been talk among the staff at Channel 4 that Alex is going to be off at some point soon and the Chloe link has emerged.

‘Alex loves fashion. She loves nice things so it’s perhaps no surprise that there is talk of her going to such a high-end brand.

‘There has been non-stop talk of her leaving Channel 4. Staff are sure that she is going to cut and run some time soon and it’s unlikely she would go to another television channel. She simply loves fashion and she is so proud of her role at Chanel. Alex was delighted when that happened a couple of years ago and without it taking too much away from Channel 4 – she puts a lot of energy into it.

‘Chloe would be a new and different challenge, though. She says that talk of her moving is nonsense but then you wouldn’t exactly admit you’re going to leave, would you?’

Ms Mahon, who was paid £1.2 million by Channel 4 last year, has become known for taking part in photoshoots, including one for Vogue magazine. And in June 2021, she wore a diamond Jessica McCormack necklace worth nearly £50,000 while she was quizzed by MPs about the ‘obscene’ salaries the broadcaster paid its senior staff.

She’s been with the company for six years and was praised for seeing off the threat of privatisation in January. In June, The Mail on Sunday revealed a ‘bloodbath’ of programmes at the cash-strapped broadcaster, with Naked Attraction, Scared Of The Dark and Rescue: Extreme Medics, filmed in Scotland, all axed.
