EMILY PRESCOTT: Sorry, but we don’t know you from Adam! Tennis club snubs Sandler

He’s instantly recognisable as the face of Hollywood comedy and was named as the highest paid actor in the world last year – but it seems London is immune to the star power of Adam Sandler.

For I can reveal the 57-year-old was recently left red-faced when his efforts to book out the tennis courts at a high-end West London club were thwarted by staff having no idea who he was.

The star had tried to book all six courts at the members’ club but staff, who didn’t recognise his name, refused this request as they were unwilling to rejig existing bookings for someone they thought was just another Tom, Dick or Harry. Adam’s people did not respond to requests for comment.

It was surely a letdown for the star who is a keen tennis player. In 2012 he played alongside John McEnroe in an exhibition doubles match at the US Open. The pair struck up a friendship after the three-time Wimbledon champion made a cameo in Adam’s 2002 comedy Mr Deeds.

The actor is certainly not short of the ‘net’ worth to book the courts.

Forbes magazine named him the highest earning actor in the world in 2023, with his four films netting him £57 million. In second place was Barbie actress Margot Robbie, earning £46 million.

Adam is currently filming a new movie called Jay Kelly alongside George Clooney, Isla Fisher and Jim Broadbent. It is being directed by Noah Baumbach, who is married to Barbie director Greta Gerwig.

And last week Netflix announced they were making a sequel to his 1996 golf comedy Happy Gilmore, which is sure to swell his bank balance even more.

Tennis is not Sandler’s only sporting interest in West London. In March, he was seen watching Chelsea – his first football match – where he irritated fellow fans with his incessant questions about the game.
