‘You’ve talked so much to so many couples,’ Emily asked the doctor, ‘You’ve talked about infidelity. What have you noticed has changed in the past 40 years?’

‘I’m sure there’s many, many things,’ she continued, ‘but what’s happening that really sort of hits you when you look back and think “my God, something has really evolved in our culture that I’m now seeing in my practice?”‘

‘I would say there are three main aspects,’ replied the Where Should We Begin podcast host.

‘But I think one of the things… and it spreads around cultures even ’til today… is the fact that because the romantic ideal has become so central and powerful.’

The therapist explained that 50 years ago, people often didn’t have sex for the first time until they married, but now commitment often means ‘I stop having sex with others when I make my commitment to you.’
