Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte have been spotted hand-in-hand in the French city of Le Havre ahead of the famous boat race there tomorrow.

The French President, 39, had to battle through crowds as visitors and locals realised they were in the company of their national leader and his spouse, 64. 

They are vising Le Havre for the Transat Jacques Vabre yacht race, which kicks off for the 13th time at 1.35pm local time tomorrow.

The couple wandered through crowds for around an hour before stopping to admire the fireworks at around 8.30pm

Seen shaking hands and posing for pictures along the Paul-Vatine Dock, they wandered around for about an hour before stopping to watch a firework display at the Eure basin this evening.

Speaking to journalists he said: ‘It was an unexpected visit to a region and a city we are very fond of, to go for a wander and see the magnificent boats before tomorrow’s event, which is always the source of much excitement and something we always look forward to.

‘Have a great time!’ he said before adding: ‘I like sport and sailing.’

The couple admired the 38 boats docked ahead of the race, which doubled up as a Saturday date night for the famous couple.

They also boarded a frigate of the French Navy to salute the personnel on board. 

Macron took part in the christening of one of the yachts with its sponsors Nathalie Renoux and Thomas Pesquet, according to Actu.fr. 

The Transat Jacques Vabre race follows the historic coffee trading route between France and Brazil and is named after a French coffee brand.
