Jose Mourinho received an incredible reaction from Inter Milan supporters on his return to the San Siro as an opposing manager.

The Portuguese manager might not be a favourite with some of his former clubs, after difficult spells at Manchester United and Tottenham.

But Inter Milan fans showed their love for Mourinho as they serenaded the Roma manager in his first match against his former side at the San Siro.

During his two years in charge, he won back-to-back Serie A titles, winning the treble along with the Champions League and Coppa Italia in the 2009-10 season.

Mourinho was arguably at the peak of his brilliant managerial career at the time, dumping out Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Champions League after a tactical masterclass over two legs.

Diego Milito then scored two goals in the final against Bayern Munich to hand Mourinho his second Champions League trophy.

Inter are the first and only Italian team to have captured a continental treble.

He told Sky Sports in 2020: ‘For me, it was all about the meaning that the cup (Champions League) had for chairman Massimo Moratti, for club captain and legend Javier Zanetti, for all the players, for the fans. For me, it was all about being unselfish. I could not be selfish.

‘That is why I felt so special. I felt special because even though it was a very important moment in my career, too, I managed to keep being humble and calm. I was paying more attention to others’ reactions than mine.

‘It was a beautiful feeling because these guys had this effect and power on me.

‘I have heard them many times saying I was very important to them, leaving a lifetime mark in their personal experiences. But I want to see it in another way. They were the ones, important to me.’

The incredible reception he received was spoiled for Mourinho somewhat by Roma’s 2-0 defeat at the San Siro.

Goals from Edin Dzeko and Alexis Sanchez mean Inter Milan are one point clear at the top of Serie A, with Roma down in seventh.
