Engadine stabbing: Shocking details emerge about stabbing rampage after driver allegedly crashed into a sedan and knifed three people – before turning the blade on himself

A driver allegedly stabbed his female passenger, a good Samaritan and a police officer before turning the knife on himself after crashing his car in Sydney’s south.

A 58-year-old man is in police custody after allegedly going on a stabbing rampage on the Princes Highway, near Old Bush Road, in Engadine just before 9am on Sunday.

Police will allege the man, who was travelling in a white sedan, stabbed his 48-year-old female passenger, while he was driving ‘erratically’ through the area.

Moments later, he allegedly crashed into a blue vehicle on the Princes Highway, before stabbing two others – a good Samaritan and a police officer – before turning the knife on himself.

Six people were treated by paramedics at the scene, including two injured in the car crash and another four people suffering from knife wounds. The four people who suffered knife injuries have been taken to hospital in various conditions.

Superintendent Donald Faulds said the 58-year-old man was known to police for various previous offences and he was in a domestic relationship with the 48-year-old woman.

A witness told Daily Mail Australia the 58-year-old alleged knifeman was pulling onto the highway in a white sedan when he was t-boned by a blue Mitsubishi sedan.

He said a bystander rushed to the alleged knifeman’s car to help out and discovered the female passenger, 48, had been allegedly stabbed.

The driver then allegedly stabbed the good Samaritan.

‘He [the alleged knifeman] was ranting and then the police went to arrest him and were shouting “get on the road” and he was trying to self-harm and he was cutting his own wrist and his throat,’ the witness said.

‘Then they chased him up the front to my place and they were trying to revive him.

‘He looked pretty bad. He was losing a lot of blood.’

Cronulla Sharks chairman Steve Mace was on his way to a footy match on Sunday when he witnessed the car crash.

Concerned about the occupants, he jumped out of his vehicle and rushed over to the alleged kniferman’s car to help.

‘I heard the guy screaming in the car and then I heard his partner screaming even louder. I tried to open the door and finally jammed it open,’ he told the Daily Telegraph.

Mace said the alleged knifeman was ranting about his female passenger, saying ‘she changed the radio station on him’.

Witnesses have reported seeing the white car speeding through the area in the lead up to the crash.

The alleged knifeman was treated by paramedics at the scene. He has since been taken into custody.

The woman was rushed to St George Hospital suffering from multiple injuries.

The good Samaritan was taken to Liverpool Hospital. It is understood he suffered a stab wound to his abdomen.

The male police officer is receiving treatment after suffering a serious laceration to his wrist during the arrest.

A witness told Daily Mail Australia he initially believed the stabbing and car crash were two different incidents because they happened at two locations about 200m apart.

He said he saw a blue and white car involved in a smash on the Princes Highway before another man was arrested near a black Hyundai further up the road.

‘The crash happened down at the lights and there was a man ranting and raving there for about 20 minutes,’ he said.

‘Then all the medical stuff and the coppers came. Next minute they were running up to a black Hyundai 200m up the road and arrested a man near the car.

‘To me, it looked like they were already following him, because the coppers were close by. I thought they must of had a warrant for his arrest.

‘He was in a white shirt, then [moments later] it was all red.’

Police used a taser to assist in the arrest of the alleged knifeman.

The incident sparked traffic chaos as police were inundated with triple 0 calls from horrified bystanders, who have described seeing ‘blood everywhere’.

The blue Mitsubishi was seen crumpled on the road following the horror smash with debris from the vehicle left scattered for several metres at the intersection.

The white sedan was also left badly damaged after the vehicle mounted the kerb at the nearby pedestrian crossing.

Paramedics worked quickly to assist the injured passengers and crews from Fire and Rescue were also dispatched to the scene.
