England suffered their first defeat under interim boss Lee Carsley as Vangelis Pavlidis struck twice to earn Greece a shock win at Wembley.

Pavlidis opened the scoring for the visitors in the opening stages of the second half, with Greece paying an emotional tribute to their late defender George Baldock, who died on Wednesday.

Jude Bellingham, who started in a false nine role, appeared to have rescued a draw with a driven equaliser in the 87th minute.

England were stunned in stoppage time when more poor defending was punished by Pavlidis, as Greece earned a first win over the Three Lions.

Mail Sport’s Craig Hope rates the players at Wembley from Carsley’s third match as England’s interim boss.

England

Jordan Pickford 3.5

Far too casual with first-half dribble and needed Colwill to bail him out. Didn’t seem on good terms with himself all night. Lucky when another error did not lead to second goal.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 6

Tried to make things happen and sent a couple of lovely balls over top. Too passive for Greece’s opening goal, but England’s best.

John Stones 4

Had a chance to make a tackle before Pavlidis scored the first goal but instead stood off and paid price. A poor night.

Levi Colwill 4.5

Athletic recovery to clear after Pickford’s mistake and was doing well enough, until weak clearance led to Greece’s first goal. Poor for second, too.

Rico Lewis 4

Has always looked good in an England shirt but struggled here. Was out-muscled too often and didn’t impact on ball. Shocker for Greece winner.

Cole Palmer 5.5

Why was he so deep? Nice on ball but fluffed two good chances. Sympathy, because Carsley wasted chance to play him at No.10.

Declan Rice 5

Wonderful against Ireland last month but, on the whole, in poor form for his country. Same again here. Did not dominate his area.

Phil Foden 4.5

Not playing with confidence and, given preferred No.10 role, did not take his chance. Did well to stay on as long as he did.

Bukayo Saka 4.5

Forced off with injury early in second half. But had seen very little of the ball and did nothing with it. Was also booked for cynically stopping counter.

Jude Bellingham 6

False nine didn’t work and neither did reversion to midfield. Was largely anonymous until fine strike to take England level. That’s why he stays on.

Anthony Gordon 5

A victim of Carsley’s ludicrous system but didn’t do enough when he did have the ball. His frustration was evident.

It felt like he was onto a winner in his first two games by tweaking the Euros system for the better. This was a mess.
