England have confirmed Craig Overton has a hairline cracked rib.

He hurt himself the previous afternoon when he dived to his left to try to take a caught-and-bowled chance.

He had also been struck a painful blow to the ribs while batting in England’s second-Test defeat in Adelaide.

Overton underwent scans before Australia resumed their innings at the WACA.

The Somerset bowler showed admirable toughness to battle through the pain barrier, even throwing himself about in the field.

England will hope Overton can continue to battle bravely on despite his injury

But like his England team-mates, he was on the receiving end of Steve Smith and Mitchell Marsh’s dominance.

The Australian captain passed 200 and was supported by Marsh who stretched his innings past 150 as the hosts built a healthy lead.

England hope Overton will be able to bowl through the remainder of the match, but his injury will be reassessed.
