England captain Harry Kane to declare himself fit for Nations League semi-final against Holland despite Champions League final despair

  • Harry Kane will inform Gareth Southgate that he is fit to play Holland this week
  • The striker appeared to be lacking match fitness in the Champions League final
  • The England captain had been sidelined with a ankle ligament injury since April 9
  • Kane insists the Three Lions will be fully focused after the European Cup final

Harry Kane is expected to declare himself fit for the UEFA Nations League – and urged his England team-mates to leave club rivalries behind in their bid for glory.

England captain Kane was due to report for international duty at St George’s Park on Monday night ahead talks with manager Gareth Southgate following the heartache of losing Saturday’s Champions League final to Liverpool.

The Tottenham striker appeared short of match fitness in the defeat to Jurgen Klopp’s men – in what was Kane’s first game since recovering from an ankle ligament injury sustained on April 9.

But it is understood Kane is ready to tell Southgate he can play a lead role in Portugal this week, leaving Southgate with a huge decision to make ahead of Thursday’s semi-final against Holland.

Southgate will also assess Kane’s emotional state following the huge disappointment of losing Saturday’s European final – the biggest club game of the striker’s career to date.

Indeed, the psychological impact of Spurs’ loss to Liverpool will be another key issue for Southgate when he decides his team for the game against Ronald Koeman’s side.

Kane will be determined to play a key role in England’s tilt at winning their first competitive trophy since 1966.

And the England captain has ordered his international team-mates to forget about the Champions League final during their time together with England.

While Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez have enjoyed a euphoric few days after lifting the trophy in the Spanish capital, Kane, Danny Rose, Dele Alli and Eric Dier will all still be overcoming the loss.

But Southgate’s success as England manager stems from the outstanding team spirit they have nurtured, a contrast to previous England regimes where domestic rivalries have soured relationships between certain players.

And Kane believes Southgate’s squad will not be distracted by what has gone before during the domestic and European seasons.

‘We’ve got such a great bond and, although we’re at different clubs, when we come here everyone’s fully focused on here,’ said Kane.

‘You don’t have to talk to people about switching off from club football. Everyone just naturally does it and I think the fact we’ve played with each other in club sides and younger England sides (means) we’re all good friends.

‘Whether you’re at Spurs or (Manchester) City or Liverpool, we’ve known each other long enough that we’ve become mates.

‘When you come here, you just look forward to meeting up and being friends.’ ‘It’s a new tournament, but it’s still a chance to win a trophy in an England shirt, and 1966 was a long time ago. We’re going to try and take full advantage.’ The Nations League kicks off tomorrow when hosts Portugal take on Switzerland in Porto.
