Jonny Bairstow didn’t get his hands on the Ashes but England’s wicketkeeper lifted a trophy at York that he will never forget.

Bairstow is part of a 15-strong syndicate who own Indian Run, the two-year-old colt who showed his rivals a clean pair of heels in the Tatersalls Acomb Stakes, a Group Three race with a history of producing future stars. Last year, for instance, it was won by subsequent 2000 Guineas winner Chaldean.

Bairstow will tour South Africa and New Zealand with England this winter, but he will carry dreams of what next spring might hold, for there was plenty to like about the way Indian Run, who is trained by Eve Johnson Houghton, scampered clear.

The Group One Dewhurst Stakes, staged at Newmarket in October, and the race that usually decides the season’s Champion Juvenile, will be next.

‘I grew up in York, went to school in York and to then be part of a winner at the Ebor meeting,’ said Bairstow, momentarily trailing off as he gathered his thoughts. ‘Will we go for the 2000 Guineas? Who knows; we’ll keep our feet on the ground but the dream is always there.’
