England fans slam Baddiel and Skinner for new version of Three Lions

Football fans have blasted Frank Skinner and David Baddiel’s decision to release a new Christmas version of Three Lions for the Qatar World Cup with the stars claiming ‘it’s going to be a classic’ despite also admitting it is ‘tacky’ and ‘demeaning’.

The comedians insist they ‘couldn’t resist’ to reunite with ‎The Lightning Seeds singer Ian Broudie to create a new version of the much-loved song first released in 1996 when England lost to Germany on penalties, again.

This time it features Christmas-themed lyrics – including ‘Three Lions on a sleigh’ and ‘football’s coming home for Christmas’ as well as a festive music video featuring a World Cup made with a Christmas pudding and custard.

There is also several nods to The Lionesses who won Euro 2022 this summer, England’s 1966 World Cup hero Sir Geoff Hurst is a carol singer and Frank Skinner even dresses as Noddy Holder from Slade.

Mr Baddiel admitted when the song launched on BBC1 last night: ‘Some might say that should be the end of it. Stop singing it. But we decided to give it one more go on the basis that the blokes haven’t brought it home’.

His comedy partner Frank Skinner added: ‘We could not resist the fact that the World Cup was at Christmas. People have said in the past that football songs are a little bit tacky. And in maths two negatives make a positive so we think there is so much tacky in this it’s going to be a classic’.

But football fans are questioning the decision to release it again – with some suggesting it is so toe-curling and saccharin-sweet that it makes them want to vomit. Many suggested it was just Skinner and Baddiel cashing in by ‘flogging Three Lions song to death’.

One wag tweeted: ‘A new version of Three Lions? Could this world cup get any worse?’ with one disgruntled fellow England supporter adding: Three Lions in the bin more like’. Another critic said: ‘Safe to say if England are as bad on the pitch as the new Three Lions song then Wales and USA will be safely into the Knockouts’.

The song begins with The Lionesses winning Euro 2022 at Wembley before Skinner and Baddiel again lament on the fortune’s of the men’s team who again came close at the last World Cup and the Euros but failed to win those championships.

Baddiel: ‘The Lionesses brought it home. Football came home with the Lionesses. And some might say that should be the end of it. Stop singing it. But we decided to give it one more go on the basis that the blokes haven’t brought it home’.

Released today, the song changes the original lyrics from 1996 of ’36 years of hurt’ to ’56’, while the comedians also poke fun at the men’s team with a reference to ’20 weeks of hurt’ in relation to the Lionesses’ victorious Euro 2022 campaign over the summer.

The chorus of ‘Three Lions on the shirt’ becomes ‘Three Lions on a sleigh’, while Sir Geoff Hurst and Lioness stars  Jess Carter and Beth England also feature in the accompanying music video. Sir Geoff is a carol singer.

Immortalised by England’s semi-final performance at home at Euro 96, the Three Lions anthem – and its iconic ‘football’s coming home’ chorus – has serenaded most of the international footballs tournaments between then and now.

The new music video, which features highlights from England games over the last year, including the Lionesses’ famous victory, begins with Baddiel and Skinner in the press conference following the final win over Germany.

Skinner sings ‘loving the Lionesses win’ during the opening verse, before singing the chorus: ‘Three Lions on a sleigh, with She-Lions inspiration. Santa says let’s play, the Christmas tree formation.’

It also shows Baddiel placing a Jules Rimet trophy ornament on top of a Christmas tree.

The duo also poke fun at Skinner’s previous addiction to alcohol, with Baddiel singing: ‘When they decided on Qatar, should have checked VAR. It’s too hot, and too far – so we’ll be snowflakes watching it here. This is our time of year, we’ll be having a beer. ‘

Skinner them chimes in: ‘Actually I won’t because I’ve got alcohol issues.’

Coming face to face with the versions of themselves from the original 1996 hit while sitting in a dated living room, the pair are then met with the arrival of England legend Hurst on their doorstep.

This year’s World Cup marks a departure from all the others that preceded it, as it will be played in the winter time, to compensate for the searing temperatures that Qatar sees in the summer.

Speaking about the song, Skinner said: ‘We just had to do it. Christmas World Cup songs are not like buses.

‘If we’d let this opportunity pull away, it would have been a very long wait for the next one.’

Baddiel added: ‘It’s between me and Mariah Carey for who really is the voice of Christmas.’

The original, which topped the charts along with the reworked Three Lions ’98, has sold almost two million copies and has been streamed tens of millions of time.

It comes three days ahead of England’s World Cup opener against Iran.
