  • England are looking to level the five-match series at 1-1 after losing at Lord’s

England openers Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed both lost their wickets in the morning session on day two of the third Test against India at Headingley, but Joe Root’s side remain in complete control as he and Dawid Malan took their lead to 104 at lunch with eight wickets still remaining.

After England skittled out India for just 78, Burns and Hameed put on an impressive opening stand of 120 on day one and were both eyeing centuries on day two.

But India had other ideas as they fought back with the ball, Mohammed Shami bowling Burns for 61 and Ravi Jadeja bowling Hameed for 68.

Dawid Malan, making his first Test appearance for three years, made a solid start to his innings at No 3 and headed into lunch 27 not out. He was joined at the crease by Root after Hameed’s wicket, with the England captain making his usual fast start, scoring 14 runs off as many balls.

Burns and Hameed had both resumed with unbeaten half-centuries to their name and they added another 15 runs to the score in just under 40 minutes, taking their first stand together to 135.

Mohammed Shami finally found a way through, coming round the wicket to the left-handed Burns and getting an inside edge into the stumps after finding some handy movement off the seam.

England scored just 21 runs in the opening hour, with Hameed setting the tone for the watchful period in Burns’ absence.

Malan joined him and hit the boundary boards with his first three scoring shots. He was off the mark with a cover drive off Jasprit Bumrah then welcomed Mohammed Siraj to the attack by slashing a pair of wide balls wide of backward point.

Hameed was showing an immaculate forward defensive but had started to get somewhat stuck, scoring just eight runs off 65 balls in the session before being undone by a peach from Jadeja.

Pressing forward at the spinner with a sound-looking press, he saw the ball straighten and beat the outside edge while also managing to clip the off stump.

It was a wonderful ball from the all-rounder and ended an impressively focused but latterly one-paced stay from the opener.

Captain Joe Root arrived at 159 for two, a much prettier picture than than the ones he has become used to confronting in recent times from number four.

England reached lunch on 182 for two.
