  • Channel 4 has won the battle to broadcast England’s Nations League matches
  • Sportsmail understands the free-to-air channel’s unlikely bid has succeeded

Channel 4 has won the battle to broadcast England’s Nations League matches this summer.

While contracts are yet to be signed Sportsmail understands that, in a historic move, the terrestrial broadcaster will screen the Three Lions’ six games against Germany, Italy and Hungary.

Sky Sports had the rights for the last Nations League tournament – which was viewed as a roaring success – and Channel 4’s victory represents a stunning coup for the free-to-air station.

Details are still being ironed out and an announcement is expected in the near future but sources have disclosed that Channel 4’s unlikely bid has succeeded.

It means that millions will be able to watch Gareth Southgate’s men without having to fork out for a subscription as they seek to fine tune ahead of the winter World Cup in Qatar.

The station has been admired for its sports coverage. Its broadcasting of cricket was said to have had a huge impact on participation levels, particularly following the 2005 Ashes series and England’s 2019 World Cup win. It recently began to screen matches from rugby league’s Super League.

The tournament has been held twice, with England finishing in third place in its first instalment. England will play four matches in June and two in September. The semis and finals are due to be played in June 2023.

Channel 4 declined to comment when contacted on Friday night.
